Re: Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

Update . . .

As I was working on the outdrives, I noticed the Starboard outdrive is seeping a little oil around the outer prop shaft seal

So, looks like I will be fixing both outdrives

I was looking for some good videos of the prop shaft seal replacement on a Bravo 3 . . . haven't found too much, mostly lower unit dis-assebly vids.

Any help with that?

TIA.

Re: Some Milky Oil from the Outdrive . . .

I am wondering if I should 'bite the bullet' and replace all of the seals on both drives?

I know that I have to replace the drive shaft seal on the port outdrive and the outer prop shaft seal on the starboard drive.

Or maybe just do the drive shaft seal on the port drive and both prop shaft seals on the starboard drive? engines have about 800 hours on them, and I am not sure of the maintenance done to the outdrives by the PO's.

As far as special tools . . . Looks like I will need

(1) Spanner Wrench (already have)

(2) Dial torque wrench (I have)

(3) Mercruiser 91-8053741 to remove outer prop shaft retainer

(4 & 5) Mercruiser 91-805382 and 91-805374 to remove the inner prop shaft retainer

Do I have to remove the inner prop shaft retainer to get at the inner prop shaft seal? Not quite sure about that watching various videos, etc.

Any help/tips would be much appreciated. I did a search and have only found 1 or 2 things specific to the seal replacement.

S/N's, etc are in my sig below.

OK, I think that I have all the tools and parts on order. . .

So, when all the stuff arrives, I can spend my evenings working on the outdrives,

the port drive is getting a drive shaft seal, plus u-joints (was spitting some rust out of the bearing seals) . . . the starboard drive is getting prop shaft seals.

I think that I am into it about $550 in tools and $250 in parts  Ouch, ouch, ouch. . .

I did not see any rust coming out of my u-joints when I did the annual lubing but I'm sure my B3 will be in need of new ones in the near future and I've never replaced u-joints before so if you can make notes/pics for how you did yours or any tips that would be great Ted.
thanks

Yup, will take lots of pictures. Maybe when I have the drive shaft out for the new seal, I will swap out the u-joints.

Yea, so the package containing my 2 new u-joints arrived today. The package looked a little funny . . . so I opened it.

Oh, I hate it when that happens, I have such a low tolerance for this sort of pain

(fortunately not from iBoats)

This must not be my day . . . I also got the anodes for the outdrives. One Bravo Anode set and one YAMAHA anode set

The Admiral had a similar problem with some cell phone batteries she recently ordered. . On a national scale, this must cost a fortune in correcting shipments.

Anodes for a YAMABRO....

If you want something done right... Do it yourself, if you can get the right parts...

And always thought it was just me... If there are 10 parts on a shelf, I'll take the one with the latent fault (that doesn't show up until AFTER the warranty period expires)....

Not entirely sure. no evidence of water in the bellows. Perhaps I will know more when I pull the old ones apart. The company that goofed on the shipment is overnighting the correct parts (u-joints this time). So, maybe I'll have some time this weekend to do the port outdrive.

I guess that I won't know that until I try to put them on the drive shaft yokes . . . :)
