i didn't see if you are going to replace the transom, but i hope you do. your this far into it, i think you will find that it is in need of replacing. i used kiln dried 2x4 and 2x6 for my stringers. the old ones were that dimension. i used marine grade plywood for the deck. lots of fiberglass. i used stainless steel screws where i could. good luck, nice boat.

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Thanks tallcanadian. Pictures are always helpful. I have a lot of work ahead of me and obviously a lot of money. On that note if it isnt to rude to ask how much did you spend on your rebuild. I have to set a budget for my self a prioritize parts and tools. Also how did you exactly bed the stringers. I've been told if you glass the stringers directly to the hull it can creat a hard joint and could split the hull on a hard wave. Ive looked at youtube and MAS epoxy info video on stringer replacement but it looked like they had pre assembled stringers that reqire epoxy only. Thanks again

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

I had a thought....When i tore up the floor i notice that at the bow the plywood floor was bowed slightly to follow the upperward slope of the bow. When I go to lay my new floor down I don't suspect that 3/4" marine grade ply will give that much. Should I go with a thiner piece up front to allow for flex and give? Also the bow had a framed casting deck, the bowed piece was never a suporting piece as far as direct traffic. Thanks for the help.

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Pictures as promised. Some of the jazzy new engine stand I built....Im pretty proud:cool: , and some of the boat in further tear down. I decided to go ahead and replace the transom and good thing I did because as y'all can see there is a nice soft spot and hole developing right in the middle of the wood. I had a thought about the materials for the transom. The original looks to be about a 1 3/4" ply but oops suggested penski board. Where can i find ply or penski that thick and secondly how do I get the old transom out with out damaging the external hull fiberglass? Still learning as always. I ll try to read what is already posted i know theres a lot of good material here. Oh another thing is there anyway I can salvage the live well or how can i make a new one, and rod box for that mater from fresh material? I wasn't planing on glassing that much but hey things always come up. Thanks guys!;)

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

I got the rest of the guts cut out today...thank god for my handy dandy little Rigid single handed sawzall. Everything looks so much simpler once its just the hull. I'm still trying to get together a construction plan for the rebuild. I plan on making some mods but I want to be carefully about weight and I know zilch really about glassing and forming i.e. Rod boxes and live wells. I haven't decided if I'm going to put everything back where it was originally or move stuff around either way i need to learn the art of fiberglass reconstruction. Ill post some more pics here in a bit.

Rob;)

Pics of the hull completly guted. You can see where the old live well resided and half the foam still exists. Still working on removing it. I work a lot so what time I do have to my self I have to share between my wife and my boat. Baby steps...

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Heres is a loose sketch(not to scale) of what I think I am going to do for my casting deck. When I cut it out I recall cross braces being there. That would give me my lateral support for my deck floor. Im also thinking of using 3/8" ply under the casing deck to allow forward upward pitch of the bow. Will that be thin enough or should i go thinner. I was also going to use 1/4" ply as a base to support the fiberglass that will be my casting deck. Any pointers would be great...any flaws in my plan? Also what type of glass whould I consider for my main deck and casting deck? There will be py beneath them but I need enough tensil strength to hangle lots of walking standing and wear, and naturally weight. Thanks!:)

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Here's what the deck in my boat looks like, 1/2 inch plywood framed with 1x2 inch framing as best I can tell, filled with foam and fiberglassed. Storage compartments on either side. The center bay will avevtually get filled in to match the rest of the deck.

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Ok, quick thought. What is the technical term for "peanut butter"? Ive been reading like crazy and most affectionately refer to it as "peanut butter" but haven't seen much detail about it. I think I'm going to be utilizing it amply in my rebuild.

Secondly when installing a new transom should there be gaps left between the hull sides and floor, as is done when installing deck to prevent hard points, or should there be no gaps with a tight fit?

Also what kind of glass would be best suited for transom use?

Thanks all as usuall and thank you for putting up with my bad grammer and well just bad english in general. I end up sitting here analyzing what I am going to say so much that I can never figure out the smoothest and well.... friendliest way to to converse. So thanks!:D

Ohh by the way Oops....Im an idiot:redface:. When you refered me to the Hull ext, I was looking for a person rather than a thread title. A little slow but I finaly got a clue. This boat of mine is going to be "fun"..... I always learn by messing things up once or twice.:p:cool:

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Heres a little update. I think I got lucky with the stringers. When I first ripped the floor out the stringers looked pretty done and gone but I finally got around to getting them extracted today.

They didn't come out in a pile of saw dust as I anticipated...in fact there are good sections of both the keel stringer and the outer stringer so I can get a good depth measurement as well as curvature line to trace out my new stringers.

That should save an hour or two on cutting and tracing new stringers from scatch.....wew did I get lucky;)

Re: Soft Deck....Unsure waht to expect

Just to follow up on Oops' post about Penske board - it is also called "Altrex PXc Board, and is made by a company called Baltek. Here's a link to a distributor's page on the product.

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=1593

One of the things that intrigues me about it, is that it is lighter than plywood. I was thinking about Seacast for my project, but found out that it weighs 42 pounds per cubic foot. With gas prices fluctuating so much (and probably soon to rise significantly), I am going to try to keep my boat as light as possible.

I am even wondering if Penske Board could be used to form the deck that I will have to replace. It would have to be used in a sandwich of the board and an external fibreglass skin, but the idea might be worth looking into.
