40HP Mariner on 14ft fiberglass side console fishing boat does 44mph with two on board. A little too fast for me but I know I have it if I need to make a run for shore or to my favorite fishing hole.

DJ,

You must have that Crownline perfectly dialed in. Is that the 385 rating (I think they call it a 454 MPI as a model)? I thought the 7.4L is technically the 310 and I am blown away if that will push it to 60. Awesome!

Baldguy / 78fourwinns
Yep, it was a scary ride over 75 or so. Past that we could only 'hit it' for a couple seconds to get a top speed reading before it started to chine walk. A 22' boat can only go so fast before the back wants to pass the front :)
The 840 h.p. is too much power (I never thought I'd say that) here... it'd be nice in a 27'. Anyways... it was fun but I wouldn't buy one.

Re: So, how fast is your boat?

My rig is pretty slow, I get 40-ish (GPS) on a good day, spinning 6000 rms. Yeah, I could prop up and get more speed, but I like having the grunt for more weight. I usually cruise around 3800-4000 rpms, which gives me about 28 mph. My lake has a 50 mph speed limit so I don't care that much about speed anyway...

I get 34mph GPS on a 16' Crestliner Amuminum Mod "V" John Boat with a Honda 40hp Tiller. Not really all that fast comparitively speaking, but its enough to catch a lot of air on a choppy day. There's something intoxicating about holding onto the tiller when the prop breaks free of the water. :D :D Best way to describe it is "Mr. Toads Wild Ride". Poor Mans' offshore racing....
Of course this only happens once in a while. Typical speed is around 30 GPS with 2 on board plus gear.

Nav

Re: So, how fast is your boat?

After repowering my 17.5' Sea Nymph GLS175 last year with my "new" '76 Johnson '85hp, I was quite pleased with my top end initially. It would top out at about 38.5 on the GPS. However, I soon became irritated that I couldn't break the 40mph barrier. At the end of last season I put on power tilt/trim... still couldn't do it(only got out once with the t/t). This year I added a new eBay special OMC SSTII prop. This past weekend I fulfilled my goal by hitting 41.5 on the GPS. I even "raced" a guy with his late model cobalt... he had to drink my wake... HA HA I still have some tweaking to get some more speed... Now if I can only break the 45 barrier I'll be happy.
