Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Update status - still need help!

Okay, I managed to get the powerhead removed, had to drill hole and cut the bolt about 3 inched below the powerhead, this worked pretty slick, no issues as that broken bolt was not going no where.

Now for the broken bolt, I heated it and whaled on it with a drift & large ball peen hammer, its not moving. I tried pounding it up as suggested - no movement!

Any suggestions for the bolt removal? Should I say screw it and just go with the five bolts to hold the power head down? If so, should I leave the broken stud in the powerhead?

Last - what is the correct way to re-install the new shift rod? It can out attached when I lifted the PH and was bending all over the place. I removed the two bolts on the bracket to get it free, is this right?

Thanks

Sorry I didn?t see this thread sooner I would have saved you lots of grief. You don?t have to pull the powerhead to replace the shift shaft. You can remove intake manifold and get the old one out with just a little prying. I?ve done it myself several times. It will come out and go back in no problem. This will only work on v4?s and not on v6s.

I'm still fighting to get the broken long bolt out and a front stud. Got a bigger hammer and still no luck. I most likely will put back together with only five bolts instead of six, that should be fine. I have all the new parts, rod was $80.00.

I think the hard part will be hanging the PH over the mid section to best alighn the shift shaft are before bolting on so it does not get bent.

No im not kidding. It turns a nightmare into a simple 3-hour job. First remove the carbs then the manifold. Remove the lower unit. Remove the shaft retained bolts that connect it to the block and slide the shaft up as high as it will go. Then with a long screw driver or pry bar use gentle pressure between the shaft and the bottom of the block right under the intake manifold gasket area. Be careful not to mar the intake gasket surface. It will bow the shaft slightly but it will not bend it. Slide in the new shaft install the intake with a new gasket put the carbs back on and you?re done. I?ve done this at least 50 times in the past 10 years.

I'm still in my nightmare a week later and not fixed yet! Darn I wish I knew this, sounds much easier then drilling holes in the side of my motor, and building lifts an all - oh well as a backyard mechanic what can I expect.

No way last bolt will come out - I whaled so hard it started a hole inside the bold hole into the exhaust housing - gonna run with five bolts, have no choice and some JB Weld filling the holes!

Good luck man. Use yamahabond on both sides of the base gasket and it may hold.

Glad to hear it. Again sorry I didn?t get to you sooner. Im sure ill have another shift rod job come in soon and ill take pictures and video to show how it?s done the easy way. There?s lots of short cuts ive learned over the past 20 years working on Yamaha?s that aren?t in any book.

Just currois, what do you get for this job the way you do it? I figure I spend about $135 in parts, my labor is free.
