I think by 91 they changed the rod to stainless. You can peak at the rod as it enters the top of the lower unit. Look for an hourglass shape that's bad.

Glad to hear it. Again sorry I didn?t get to you sooner. Im sure ill have another shift rod job come in soon and ill take pictures and video to show how it?s done the easy way. There?s lots of short cuts ive learned over the past 20 years working on Yamaha?s that aren?t in any book.
Any Pictures or more info I could pass on to my mechanic. I told him about this but wasnt convinced so he tried to pull the powerhead with no luck I thibnk he believes it's just easier to re-power, but i don't have those funds. Any help would be great.

Thanks

I do not have pics of the R&R on my '89 115 but it is a snap. Remove everything includeing the intake, be careful of the reeds , disconnect the shift shaft retainer and pull it out. The new one will slide in with a slight bit of effort.

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Hey guys,

Thanksfor having me on here. im in the same boat, we lost forward drive 4miles off shore recently, we had to disconnect the linkage and manually push into gear and start the motor in gear to get back in. my mech said the leg hadnt been aligned correctly when it was last off, looking at this thread i think he is clearly wrong.

I have the hour glass going on on the rod.

Few questions

was there ever a sticky with descriptions on this possted?

Has anyone used the shiftshaft.com parts and is it easier that way?

does anyone have a list of parts required to replace this item on a 115 v4?

thanksin advance

Mike
