Excellent! Carbs off, unbolt and lift shaft a little persuasion and out she comes.
Insert new shaft bend slightly to get past powerhead and bolt it in.
Sound right?

Yep that?s right but you also have to take off the intake manifold and the lower unit. Easy as pie.

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Thank you so much parrfive.....
I'm going through the same issue, 1991, 115 Yamaha. I brought it to a guy and two bolts broke. Its costing me almost a grand. I'm going to him this morning and let him read your comments. He hasn't pull the p/h yet, maybe it's not to late.
Can I leave the two broken bolts in? I can't imagin them coming free with the other 4 tight. I was going to junk my motor, that girl runs GREAT it would've been a shame.
I hope it works. Thank you, Thank you.....

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

The mech. said since he is this far along he recomends completing the job by seperating the p/h and removing the bolts. He doesn't want to leave the bolts broken, which I understand. I told him if it won't come apart than I'd like to attack it parrfive's way. I want to take the save, but smart way around this.
Can more damage be done by forcing this p/h apart?
The mech. seems to know what he's talking about, to me anyway.
Do you agree with him? Is there anything besides the impeler, and gasket that needs to be changed?
I was pretty upset about this problem with my motor as I said before, but I feel that there's hope now, not to go broke on another engine.

No he can?t do much damage unless he has to destroy the exhaust guide (the part the powerhead mounts to) or somehow hurts the gasket surface on the powerhead. My guess is that he?s competent enough to do the job without to much destruction. It?s a shame though; the other way is so much easer. Good luck.

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Par would you be able to start a new thread with this info? Something like "easier way to replace shift shaft on 115/130" Your info/pics are kinda buried in the thread and I think you would be a hero to alot of us who need to do this job.
Too bad Bood, Mine is a great runner also so replacing the shift shaft will give it a new lease on life!

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

My mech. can't get the p/h off, two broken bolts. He might have one more option. He tells me that my (1991) 115 Yamaha is different that the (1988) 130 and the shift shaft can't be changed threw the manifold/carbs. The block sits over the shaft?
Is that true, is he hopefully mistaken?
I'm losing hope fast....

Yes it can be done the same way as the 88 year model. Print out the thread and show him the pictures.

I did show him, And I think its the same also. I don't think he wants to beleive it. He's letting his buddy look at it, to see if he can seperate it this week. I'm in a mess, wish I could get it to Texas. How much is a round trip ticket to Central Fl.?
What do you sugest?

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Not yet, my boat is in yet another set of hands(4th). The last guy broke 2 bolts off and can't get them out or get the p/h sperated. Now its at a Yamaha shop and this mec. says he used to work in the Keys and has done many of these. I just seen him today and he assures me he can do it for about $500.00 labor. People should be aware of these older Yamaha motors.
I take my boat 35 miles out during the week when theres no other boats, thats how much I truss this motor, it runs great and gets good fuel mileage.
Its a shame Yamaha did this stupid manuf. job. I knew nothing about it till it happen.
Is there anything else I don't know about?
Any other blunders I should address now its apart?
I wanted to pay parrfive a plane ticket and expenes to fly from Texas to Fla.
to fix it.

Thanks for asking, I'll let you know...
David.

Since you asked, the steering arm can rust quite badly, also the Trim and tilt pump is a pain in the a** to R/R when it is on the boat.
I hope you get this job finished soon, I had mine out yesterday probably for the last of the season (CT).

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Went by the shop and the p/h was pulled and the bolts are "all" out......
Its going back together today..Wa-hoo!!!! 3 sets of hands it went through.
I wish I would've know about pulling the intake before this all went down this way. Oh well. At least it getting fixed. I seen the shifting shaft and the whole thing was corroted, can't beleive I didn't get stranded 30 miles out.
Any one with a older Yamaha needs to have that shaft checked. I never new about that problem till it broke (in my yard) thank GOD.
Big problem people need to be aware of.

David.

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

yes I did, Saturday morning. HAL-A-LOOYA. Than I went out for a test ride and all was great.
I can tell you I was freaking out when they told me it was now an anchor not worth fixing. All I knew than it was 10K for another one. So I keep searching for a cure. It went through 4 sets of hands but ended up in some good ones. Yamaha droped the ball when they did that blunder. $1,000.00 total, is alot better than the alternative. These guy's used to work in the Fl. keys and did it in a day. I'm glad I didn't take no for an answer from the other guys.
Now were getting ready for Grouper, Sail & King Fishing season.
Gotta love Florida for fishing all year round.
Thanks for you concern by the way.
I want to thank Parrfive also for mentioning the intake manifold trick also, I think that could open the door for alot of issues that are to come for older Yamaha owners.

Thanks again,
David.

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

Will this method work on 225 V6 1992 Yamaha shift rod?
Mine is corrorded and it would cost about $1000.

Thanks

Re: Shift rod - shift issue 1988 Yamaha 130

23, I don't think it will work on a v-6. I can't swear to that, back earlier in this thread Capt Ken talked about driling the bolts, thats what my mech. did after we broke three of them.
Parrfive would know better as he was the one that brought this to my attention.
Good luck to you and please share any info, sharing this info really helps us all.
