the quotes below are from Sunday's Fort Worth Star Telegram

James Dobson has his work cut out for him.

The conservative Christian recently denounced SpongeBob SquarePants -- the harmless cartoon sponge who holds hands with his friends and lives in an underwater pineapple -- for appearing in a "pro-homosexual video." If Dobson's panties are in a bunch over a platonically affectionate pot scrubber, he'll be positively apoplectic when he sees what The Simpsons are cooking up. A regular character on the peerless Fox comedy will, in one of its next three Sunday-night episodes, come out of the closet and -- quicker than you can say "I ... d'oh!"-- be married in a same-sex wedding.

Bugs Bunny
The frequent cross-dresser kisses Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam with abandon and takes extreme pleasure in belting out show tunes.

Velma
The broad-shouldered Scooby Doo heroine wears thick turtlenecks and is said to be the Scooby character who represents Smith College, situated in the lesbian-friendly town of Northampton, Mass.

Marcie and Peppermint Patty
The Peanuts characters are inseparable best friends. Patty wears pants, has a deep voice and regularly whups Charlie Brown at sports.

Batman and Robin
Rumors have circulated for years about the Dynamic Duo, given Robin's nickname (Boy Wonder), their buff physiques and penchant for tights.

Bert and Ernie
Another much-rumored pair that spends an awful lot of time together. But they appear more asexual than anything.

Tinky Winky
This Teletubby was famously outed by Jerry Falwell in 1999 because he wears purple, carries a handbag and has a triangle symbol on his head.

Hefty Smurf
Works out frequently and is often seen carrying a dumbbell. And let's not forget: There was only one Smurfette for the 101 Smurfs.
Just sounds to me like more locker room homophobic rhetoric. The power of the tiny mind is impressive indeed....

Is he planning to actively date any cartoon characters? I mean is he sexually attracted to one? Glad he has enough time to worry about these kind of things.

James Dobson needs to find something even slightly constructive to spend his time on. What a joker

James Dobson would make a great cartoon character. How about giving him a role as himself in "South Park"?

Well I won't shy away from this one. I also won't respond to any of your comments, as that would be pointless and likely get this thread "poofed."

But Dobson is one of the most knowledgable and respected child developement authorities there is. The fact that he doesn't hold liberal views draws alot of criticism.

Unlike many public figures and media giants (Disney) (cnn), he doesn't hide his agenda, which is to help people and children lead a safe and healthy life.

So are you saying you agree with his views on this, Roscoe, or are you just proclaiming his expertise in the field of child psychology?

Re: Sexually Ambiguous Cartoon Characters

By the way..... if you guys dig a little deeper into this story, once again the left wing media is only reporting the news as they feel we should hear it. Not how it really happened or what the person they are attacking really said. The fact is Dobson is against using these cartoons to promote the Gay lifestyle to children which is exzactly what some company is doing. There is a video that was produced using all these charicters with a message of acceptance of the homosexual person (which should be being taught about everyone not just gays)The issue is not if sponge bob is gay, its that they are using a cartoons to teach children about the gay lifestyle. Now if your for that and ok with this tactic, great, but at least know the facts before you attack a very respected intellegent man. Oh and also for the record Im pretty sure bert and ernie did have something going on........Kidding. sort of. :)

Re: Sexually Ambiguous Cartoon Characters

Having not read his comments in their entirety, I do not know what he said, so cannot agree or disagree. But I have read a couple of his papers, one of his books, and tend to agree with much of what he has said.

Can't comment on spongebob either, as I have only seen the character on tv commercials.

But I can comment on the way that large corps target the small children in society and push their agendas and products. I don't like it. The children are made to feel like outcasts and weirdos if they don't see the latest movie, or have the new superhero's sweatshirt or lunchbox. Sets up a divide between parent and child if the parent doesn't agree to let the child see the movie.

Re: Sexually Ambiguous Cartoon Characters

Roscoe, corps only push people around if they let them.

Who do you blame, the parents or the corps?

From what I heard, spongebob didnt say to accept gays, it was more of a tolerate gays. I can live with that, cause the bible teaches us exactly that.

***************************************
Below is an editorial I found with more info, that I dont necessarily agree with.
*****************************************
Christian conservatives, in their ongoing anti-gay tirade, again have their knickers in a wad, focusing on SpongeBob SquarePants, a cartoon character easy to dislike (because he's an annoying dork), but not for the reason the right dislikes him.

SpongeBob, as asexual a character as there ever was, has come under attack for promoting a most unchristian characteristic, tolerance.

He is among characters due to appear in a video remake of the 1979 Sister Sledge song, "We Are Family," due for March distribution to 61,000 or so public and private schools.

With other kid-friendly personnel such as Arthur, Bob the Builder, Jimmy Neutron, Barney, Clifford, Blues Clues, Lilo & Stitch, Madeline, the Rugrats, Winnie the Pooh, the Muppets, various Sesame Street folk, Bill Cosby, Diana Ross and Whoopi Goldberg, the program will promote diversity and tolerance, encouraging kids to pledge "respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own."

Shocking stuff.

Among sponsors are FedEx (which will deliver all the videos) and the Anti-Defamation League. The show also will air on Nickelodeon, PBS and the Disney Channel - if not submarined by the powerfully intolerant right.

Our neighbor to the north, James Dobson's Focus on the Family, labels the We Are Family promotion as "bait-and-switch," "insidious" and aimed at "brainwashing" young people. Dobson objects to "the way in which those childhood symbols are apparently being hijacked to promote an agenda that involves teaching homosexual propaganda to children."

The odd little sponge now joins others in the right's McCarthy-era-like persecution of characters like Murphy Brown and the Teletubbies' Tinky Winky.

Come on, now.

Gays and lesbians are not the downfall of the human race. One aspect of their lives may or may not differ from - but does not threaten - the norm, and yet they have been defined and identified by that solitary difference. By and large, gays and lesbians are the same as anyone else: They love and hate, work and loaf, buy and go into debt, care and not care, vote Democrat or Republican, go to church or not, pay or avoid taxes, like or dislike war. They are less apt to molest children than straights, and, given the chance, are as able to be good parents (or bad) and good neighbors (or bad) as you and I.

What they do for recreation is of no concern to any other human, any more than what Mr. and Mrs. Upright do. Do we worry about what neighbors Adam and Eve do when the lights are out? Why should we worry about Adam and Steve, or Adelaide and Eve, all consenting adults?

Should we, in our intolerance, also despise and undo the workings and contributions of earlier known or "suspected" gays, lesbians and bisexuals such as Socrates, Plato, DaVinci, Michelangelo, Bacon, Lord Byron, Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Tchaikovsky, Willa Cather, Virginia Woolf, Jean Cocteau, John Maynard Keynes, Cole Porter, James Baldwin, Tennessee Williams, Frieda Kahlo and Andy Warhol?

In this newfound era of moral values, we'd do well as Americans and, yes, as Christians, to leave behind intolerance and focus instead on moral values of genuine import: poverty, hunger, a war's pointless carnage, enhancing the commitment of male-female marriage and worrying less about the commitment of same-sex couples.

Tolerance is a simple ideal; it needn't be foreign to any person of any faith.

Alas, it is.

Re: Sexually Ambiguous Cartoon Characters

There are a couple things, or terms / words that just are not in the Bible, but are taught and described by New Age movements (and one very OLD AGE movement), which are (1) Tolerance and (2) Trinity. Neither are in the Bible, and though the concept of "Tolerance" is there, the teaching of New Age is not what the Bible would be teaching if these folks really understood. I really want to puke when I hear all this "tolerance" garbage the New Age movements are throwing around (so what if they are rank sinners, as long as tehy don't hurt me I can just tolerate them...oh gag me!!!), just like most of the current day "Political Correctness" terminology the world is shoving in our face every day. Jesus taught us to "Love our neighbor" but He NEVER taught us to love, or tolerate, sin. No He didn't...in fact He said that one day He will catually LAUGH at the calamity of sinners who do not "Tolerate" His WORD and repent. Oh, and by the way, REPENT means to ask forgiveness and TURN AWAY from...not to continue in...sin that is!!!

Listen, IN MY OPINION, if you have such a tolerant attitude toward sin, what are you going to think when the GREAT JUDGE of all time casts SIN and DEATH into Hell for all time? Those who are eat up with, and full of, sin, are going to be judged and cast in also. Oh, but we don't like to think about that, do we? This has turned into a "Let's just all love one another and tolerate everything" society, forgetting the meaning and teachings of the Holy Scriptures. Oh, don't talk about Hell, don't talk about sin, just teach me and talk about LOVE ,LOVE, LOVE...

OK, now I will sit back and take my blastings...

And can someone please explain who is being talked about in I Timothy 3:16, and help me understand what it means?

Re: Sexually Ambiguous Cartoon Characters

I always thought that cartoons were for youngsters. These young people the cartoons are created for haven't even got their hormones yet. It is a fact that children do not think like adults. This is the main thing that some parents have trouble teaching their kids. It is because they can't think and reason like a child.

Dobbs is another that is taking the media and creating his negative twist on things just for the controversay.

Some iboats members write better and have better view on things that alot of the journalists that are out there. Screw the news, all it does is make me depressed. Plus it isn't always 100% on the money.

They are mutually exclusive, KIZ. You cannot elevate one without diminishing the other. It is simply a part of another liberal ploy to bring everything and everybody down to THE LOWEST common denominator.
