The first time I removed the left hand nut I put the splined coupler on the shaft and held it with a vise and pipe wrench while using a socket on the nut.
The second time I had to do this, I broke the nut loose while the upper gear box was still installed on the drive (remove the top cover of the upper gear box. I blocked a prop blade to lock the upper shaft. I find this method much easier. Just be careful to block the blade so it has maximum leverage to resist turning, otherwise you can bend a blade tip.

I disassembled my entire 270 without a single special tool. Sometimes you just have to get a little creative.
I cannot remember what I did with that nut. I probably used an impact driver which popped it right off.

if i had to do it again.... yes i would leave it attached like your 2nd time. too much of a pain to do it off unless you have a coupler handy or that $200 tool.
I hope i have some luck finding a coupler... i'd gladly pay more than shipping to get one sent to me....if anyone has any spares laying around. I have a funny feeling no one is going to give me one if they can even find a busted, bent one.
I really dont want to ruin the one I have....was that a problem?
This is exactly what I did for the lower. I couldn't remember if I used this method for the upper too but maybe I did.
If you can borrow an impact gun (battery powered or corded) I highly recommend it. You won't even have to clamp anything down too much, the impacts just break it free.
I have an impact gun.... but need a larger socket.... this one is well over an inch.....
let me try after I get the right sized socket... what size is it exactly like 1 1/4? or possibly metric....
I have punched thru alot of pins in my life...... but this one wont move ...or I am just not seeing it right in that little hole. I'm hitting it so hard I have sparks coming off the punch so its not normal.
