Re: Service of DP-A Volvo outdrive

I used the proper tools and a press. I was a Volvo tech at the time and had the tools at the shop I worked at.
Never tried to back-yard one.

A piece of pipe smaller than the gear shaft would do the job, or an extention with a socket on it.

This is the preferred method around my backyard. Give it a shot...Unless you've got a press handy.

ok i understand the concept....but still dont know how you press it out. I can get a socket on an extension.... and then what? you cant do it by hand.... wont fit in a vice..... so how? c-clamp is too wobbly?

Yes, since you have taken the ujoint shaft out, you will have to replace the "Clamping sleeve" shown on page two in the pages below. That sleeve can not be reused.

View attachment rolling torque.pdf

PS: Disregard page one of the file, you don't have to replace the races.

please tell me how you use a socket and extension to remove this. do you include the use of a sledge hammer?

ok...so I assume a pipe with a flange on it would work? but how can I find such an exact diameter pipe?

The socket is the backyard drift. if you don't have one that fits well, don't push your luck, the tool is $30. you're deeper into that Outdrive than I've ever been, so I'm learning along with you.

ok...

I was about to start whining.... but I'm over it now. :)

I will get the gear pressed out. its really the only way not to even chance damaging this gear....and last time I checked these gears are not cheap.

will get it pressed and be back shortly....

I am also assuming I will need to get it pressed back on....correct? to 1mm

I hear you....

but I still dont know how you do this without a press.

the shaft of the input gear protrudes above the bearing....that's the problem...if it was recessed....it would be no problem to just stick a same diameter pipe or drift in the shaft. But the issue I'm having is that even if you put a socket on the shaft you cant beat it out without the possibility of hitting the bearing.

And I am not replacing this bearing.....so i don't want to risk it.

BTW in case anyone ever needs an idea to hold the upper unit without buying a special tool....

Ok

done with that fiasco....

back to the rebuild.

I tried to grease one of the ujoints and one side would not take grease.

So I disassembled and found that according to the diagram I seem to be missing the cork rings???. also two of the lock rings bent when i took them out.

so here is a picture of everything I have that was on this side of the u-joint. (minus the two broken lock rings.....)

so i was looking for parts but it only has a part no for the lock ring, it seems I cant buy the other parts or does it come when you buy the lock rings?

decided to redo the Ujoint

Hi Don,

Yeah maybe I overreacted.... but if I ever see him in one of my threads again.... I will not return here... you have been great to work with here Don...

I do post on other forums... because i like 1-2-3-4-5 opinions..... the more the better....

thalasso chimes in and always redirects with links here.... and others dont like it....and unsubscribes to my posts....

Plus you know how it is online.... you never know who is who....

He has butted into 2-3 of my posts on other forums.... and "lassoed" people here. Not only that but he INSULTS me then.

I've been happy with this forum, but it just is so obvious that someone is playing games trying to steal people to come here.

Personally I don't care for any of that....I just want to get on with this outdrive..... I get annoyed when the only times I hear from someone is to link here.

When you pulled the top transmission unit off, did you notice any shims between it and the intermediate?... they can be easily lost if you are not careful.
