Hey guys, I know there are multiple threads on the subject of using rustoleum to paint boats but i have a specific question.

I am trying to decide whether or not to give my old Checkmate a Rustoleum paint job, i have seen some jobs on this site that look very nice. I would be planning on painting the deck, and down the gunwales. The lower hull will stay black gelcoat becuase it is still in fairly decent shape. Here is my question: How long should i wait to take my boat to the lake after painting. There will be some paint down the gunwales, but none in the water when the boat is on plane. Furthermore, if i chose to paint the deck only, so all paint is above the waterline, how would this effect the time to be back out on the water. I know it sounds silly, but i am used to being out 2-3 times a week, i know i would have to lose at least a week..but past that??

Thanks for your help
Alex

Re: Rustoleum Questions

If the weather isn't too humid, one week is more than plenty for the Rustoleum Topside, two weeks tops if you keep dew off it with a good cover or canopy. If you are planning to use Regular Rustoleum, you can't wait long enough for that stuff to fully dry, a couple months at least. There really is that much of a difference between those two product lines.

Re: Rustoleum Questions

Yes, regular rustoleum takes forever and a day to dry. Thin coats will help it cure faster, but I wouldn't plan on walking on it for at least a couple of weeks, possibly longer. It's a good "bang for the buck" paint, but has it's limitations and drawbacks.

I has some problems spraying it (sags would appear after 1-2 days) which was a huge problem... I had to wait 1 month for the stuff to cure enough to wet sand the sags. I probably should have just stripped it and started over, but didn't. That's the biggest problem I see with Rust'o, if you have a problem, it's going to take forever to correct the problem. (On the flip side, I got a sag while spraying my transom with catalyzed automotive paint, waited a couple hours, sanded it out and sprayed it again, the same day...) Sometimes it's better to spend the extra money on top quality products.

I painted the entire boat and waited one week. No problems. I do remember that the weather was unusually hot and dry.

In my opinion, you could use it after one week if you're very careful with it. Two weeks till it gets pretty durable if the weather is nice and warm. It will only get better from there.

Hmmmm, doesn't that sound familiar. Yes its much better to use a top quaility paint on a boat.

Ayuh,... This is the 1 drawback to Rustoleum industrial enamels,...
They cure extremely S l o w l y....
Especially when exposed to foot traffic...

Hull bottoms, it's go to go in a couple of days,...
Under foot, I donno how long to wait...

Around here, at the Tractor Supply stores, I can get "Majic", catalyst hardener, for oil based enamel paints,...
It's for their house brand of paints, but works perfectly with Rustoleum...
It causes a Quicker cure, better hardness, 'n abit better gloss...

Re: Rustoleum Questions

Thanks everyone! you gave me a lot to think about, i will definitely look for a hardener if o go this route. I should have been more descriptive i suppose. When i said i wanted to paint the "deck" i was not speaking of the floor on which passengers walk, but the top deck of the runabout style boat i am painting. Is there a different word for this? I am referring to the second half of the fiberglass mold, the hull, and then the top deck that is connected to the hull with rivits at the rub rail. There really isn't any "foot traffic" on any of the painted surfaces. Here's a picture of the boat.

Visit tractor supply and buy a can of hardener and follow the directions. It will speed the curing and keep it harder.

X3 about trying to get the hardener. When I was having fits with Rusto I tried to find the hardener locally, but couldn't find it.

No Tractor Supplies out in this area,,, probably because there are not many tractors out here, go figure...

Re: Rustoleum Questions

Usually an auto parts store can get it........ just get a hardener that works with a single stage paint..... most parts stores know what that means.

Re: Rustoleum Questions

Notice my location, i have no shortage of farm supply stores! :) What is the difference in Rustoleum vs the implement paint at the farm supply stores. I noticed they do have an optional hardener, so i assume it would be a good hardener to use with rustoleum as well?

Bond-o, i have noticed that you seam to be the resident master of the rustoleum paint job. What is your favorite way of application? I was thinking roll & tip for the ease of use, lack of mess and overspray, no need for protective equipment (ventilation of course). However, i do have the means to spray if need be, i would just have to spend some more on respirators, plastic for a makeshift paint booth, filters, etc.

If ya mix that hardener into your gallon does it mess up the paint for storage? Or do ya just mix it in as ya go?
