Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

Since there seems to be so much debate on whether or not a given boat is worthy of restoration, or is ready for the junk yard, I feel that maybe we should try a thread about this topic. Post up some pics and information on the boat in question, and post which two (2) redeeming qualities you think qualifies said boat for restoration. The resident panel of experts can weigh in and discuss why/why not said boat actually has/does not have those qualities.

This is all in good fun, so no hurt feelings allowed. :D

New rule: the project boat in question must have at least two (2) of the six (6) redeeming qualities listed below to be considered for project worthy status.

1. Good hull
2. Good engine and/or drive
3. Good interior
4. Good trailer
5. Collectable/rare/sentimental status
6. Because (insert person's name here...wife, child, dad, etc) likes it

Great Post! I'm almost a little afraid to post pictures of my already restored boat on this page as I'm afraid she may come up a little short.

Meh...bring on the pics. I already have mine in it's own resto thread, so it's a moot point for it, BUT...in fairness, it has:
1. good hull, 2. good drive (engine shot), 3. good interior, 4. good trailer, 6. my wife and kids both like it (so do I)...so it was a prime candidate for restoration. :)

For a basic boat, I say it has to have at least 3 out of the first four.

As to the last two:
  • If it's truly a collectible, it may be worthwhile in any case.
  • And if the wifey wants it, she's getting it, no matter what it is ;)

I guess another question is how "good" is "good"? Does that mean "needs nothing"? Or "just needs a buffing"?

Because the difference between a deck that is "a little rotten" and "a lot rotten" is basically nil. And in my experience the vast majority of boats you're gonna find are just a "little" rotten and have just a "little" cracking in the vinyl and have just some "little" gougues in the hull and only need a "little" engine work before they can start, etc. etc. etc. ;)

"Good" will depend largely on the individuals ability to fix it I would think, or maybe how much crap they are willing to put up with! :D Purely subjective, and a large reason for this thread.

All I can say is what was I thinking. I do love the lines as mama so that didn't hurt. Engine shot interior in boxes unknown out-drive all for 700 dollars. What was I thinking.

I picked up this 1987 Sea Nymph CC191 for cheap money. I will post new picks as I upload them. It had a good hull, good engine (1987 merc 75 hp), great trailer, and I wanted to go fishing. However the interior was junk. I think it was worth it.

Question #1 - Is it aluminum?

Yes - well heck yah it's worthy of being rebuilt!

No - ah, prolly not.

Do we need more any more questions?

@Proshade...you had the prerequisites for draggin her home for sure, and I guess you already started on it, so like me and rickryder, it's kind of a moot point. I (personally) think that the Badliner name on it disqualifies at least one of the other good points, so you might fall just under the required two ;) ...otherwise, if #6 says "wife" in the blank, then all others are irrelevant. Happy restoring!

@betterthan...yep, IMO you did juuuust fine. :)

@jasout... :rolleyes:

She has been on the water for 3 years. Need to redo the interior but it is just to much fun riding the waves.

Come on now Jason....... old itchy boats are great investments, especially if you can use them for donor motors and trailers and cut em up small enough for the trash guy to take em. :D

Ok.....fine.....but what are the rules for when you've owned the boat for 30 years and it is now in need of floors, outdrive, gell coat...etc...has a great motor, interior is good...and you're just not sure it's worth it, but you are attached to it and don't want to sell it but you've already got another boat?

edit...The 1980 Coronado is the other boat :D.....the one I can't seem to part with is a 1968 16' Starcraft 140hp Merc....great running boat...but the floors are goin soft at the rear jump seats...and some moron marina mech. I let put seals in the lower unit crack the casting and busted the water pump.....we epoxied it...replaced the pump, but it still gets a little water in the lube....just change it every year and run the snot out of it.

Let the games begin!

Can I please add some more..

7. Do you have the tools, time, safety equipment,Complete understanding, capability and the facility for the resto.
8. Can you afford it.
9. Are parts even available.
10. Investment for profit ( are you going to buy/fix/sell ).
11. If not for profit are you willing to loose money in the restoration ( look at # 5 then ).

I would say its a Boat to boat and person to person question..

I can take any hurricane damaged boat and fix it no prob..the motor and rigging I will have to find some other source to complete the project...

12. IS IT WORTH IT to someone personally.

13. are you willing to RESEARCH.

YD.

Ok how about been sitting for 15 years. Gas tank shot. Engine has piston melted down and gel coat feels more like sandpaper.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I purpose adding a option 7 to the list.

7: Because the owner is crazy and picked it up cheap.

I that case my Lumbering Oaf has 1 (good hull bad stringers  ) 2,4,6, and 7

All kidding aside. Any boat is a worthy project if the owner thinks it is, no matter how bad of shape it is in. I will always be happy to help out someone wanting to fix up their car, boat, or house any way I can as long as they are passionate about it. Boats whether they are new, used, or restored are rarely profit making ventures. No matter how much or little money you spend buying or fixing up your boat you will not get your cash back out of it. It returns on your investment in memories, relaxation, beers drank, and fish stories told. Not to mention the quality time you get to spend with family and friends on the boat. In my book those returns are far more valuable then that green paper with funny pictures on it. Why? Because no matter what happens that time spent and those memories made can never be taken away. Remember "life is a collection of memories" not how much money you have.

OK that got way to heavy :D ;) No for some pics om my Project.

Lumbering_Oaf You know that Baylinner isnt worth it I will be right over to remove it from your sight as soon as I find out where you live. No where can I hide it so mama wont shoot me in the head? All jokes aside I love that hull, classic lines with style.
