jet and orfice plug are one and the same...you can purchase ~ $20~ an OMC Jet Removal Tool. Part No. 317002..or, as KFA suggests, grind down a straight slot screwdriver to fit < I've seen the dimensions given for this..might try a serarch on the forums >..

Well you guys should all get a chuckle out of this update. Finally found the culprit, yes it was dirt/crap in the main jet. Ended up removing the carb again and tearing it down so I could get a real good cleaning in that area. The motor now runs great, starts right up, idles fine, give it throttle it wants to go, just awesome!!! One small problem now that just developed... IT won't shut off lololol

From one extreme to the other, eh? LOL. Well at least you got her running. It should have a kill switch on it somewhere and/or you can just twist the throttle all the way down to try to get it to stall/shut off, like a lot of the old vintage motors did. Keep us posted.

Re: Rough Running Johnson 30 HP

Ahhh got that solved now. May pull it out of the garage anf get a decent video to put up later today. Still seems to be running a bit rich and I have the idle turned the whole way down at the throttle cable adjustment. If it weren't below freezing I'd have it out on the river for a test run. May just bundle up and go for it anyhow...

Video from today, no complaining about the streaks down the shaft. When I worked on it earlier today I drained the carb a few times into the cowling and it washed out down the shaft. I'll be sure to clean her up good.

I'm still fighting the urge to take it to the river for a test run today... brrrrr that would be a cold ride. What still gets me is that main jet not being identified as such in an literature I read. It is referred to as an orifice plug?? To me an orifice = opening and a plug means closed lol

I say dress warm and go for it. Some guys up here in Minnesota don't stop until the water freezes up, then they ice fish. LOL.

Re: Rough Running Johnson 30 HP

Hi timberwolf. glad you got her running (and stopping). I think part of the reason it's still running a bit rough is two fold. One is that it's in a barrel which is ok, but lacks the same amount of back pressure as a larger body of water (i.e. lake or ocean). It also looks like the water is too low. You want it to be filled up to about and inch or two below the exhaust port. The hard part is findng a big enough bucket. I use an old trash can on my 20 hp, but some folks can get a hold of 55 gal drums which are nice. Try submerging that leg another 6"-8" and I think you'll find she idles a little better and is much more quiet. Tweak it in again on the lake to get it just right, snug down the needle nut and you should be all set for quite a while. Congrats again!

Re: Rough Running Johnson 30 HP

Well I fell victim to the devil woman that's been living in my garage and took her for a spin. Running great!!! Speedometer doesn't work other then turn on so I have no clue what my speed was. Steering console is on the right hand side so when I'm alone in the boat I will need a counter weight to keep her level. She comes up on plane at about half throttle :) I never opened her fully up, was a little nervous as I've never owned anything that went faster then 18 mph so when I have someone else along and a little more comfy I'll open her up and get a good video to post. I did notice the steering cable is loose, I've never worked on that before but I suppose it can't be too difficult to tighten up looks like adjustment is done at the rear. It actually was a little warmer on the river then away from it. I have to say though she was smooth as silk :)

SCHWEEEET!!!!! Congrats! Search the forms here for threads on adjusting your steering. If worse comes to worse you can buy new steering cables right here at iboats. Just click on the Marine Store tab and look under steering. You can enter your make and model and it'll tell you what you need. Glad you got in your maiden voyage, but it didn't "officially" happen until we get pic/vid ;) Cheers!

P.S.
you get extra points for braving the cold! I'm such a wuss that when it got below 60 here today and I had to go inside. LOL.

Re: Rough Running Johnson 30 HP

Well guys here's a bit of an update. I've had the boat out a few times now and its working almost perfect. I need to replace the fuel line from the tank as it is really stiff and the squeeze bulb is also stiff. I still have a slight issue when its cold. The best way I can describe it is to say it sounds like an engine that is out of time. It fires up great with the fast idle engaged but after 30 seconds or so it spits and shuts off. It will do this three or four times before it is warmed up, once its warmed up it won't do that at all. I still need to get a good set of champion plugs yet and that fuel line so I'll see where it is after that. Using a GPS app on my phone I can gain a top speed of 31 mph going down river and 30 MPH upriver. Right now the current is fast as the water is high and I can drift nearly 1 mph. I was kind of hoping I would get a little more speed out of it but I guess I can't really complain. It has a plywood floor, carpeting and three pedestal seats plus you add in my 200 lbs, a full tank of fuel and two concrete blocks to make it sit level and I've already got a bit of a load. I was out with my son and I and he weighs in around 165, take out the concrete blocks and we can achieve 26 mph. I also noticed it is a thirsty lil bugger when it comes to fuel. The ultimate test for this little lady will be when she hits the shores of Halliday lake in northern Ontario this summer.

Re: Rough Running Johnson 30 HP

Glad to hear you're enjoying the motor. That may be a lean sneeze you're describing? Starting will become easier as you get to know your motor. I have two of these motors and they both are cold blooded. Since mine has a manual primer, I just feather it a little when cold starting.
The main idea is to give it more fuel when cold. I'm not sure how the fast idle feature works, but it may do the same? Also, you could try opening the slow speed needle on the carb a bit. 2 strokes love oil. Make sure to run it at 50:1 fuel mix. Happy boating.

Some spray indicating the engine might be a bit too low on the transom??

This video was made about three weeks ago. Central Pennsylvania, Raystown Lake. I agree Haffiman I'm not 100% happy with that spray pattern. I've got the trim set almost all the way up but may have to look at installing a jack plate of some sort on the transom to lift the motor a couple inches.
