I have a 3.7 mercruiser in which I would like to purchase a set of roller rocker arms for it and would like to know where I can find these. I also would like to know if I would need to replace the pushrods with some of a different length.

Re: Roller Rocker arms

Most use the same pushrods. Try summit Racing online for roller rockers. Have never seen any for specific marine applications.

Re: Roller Rocker arms

The 3.7 uses the head from a 460 ford (7.4) as well as the rods, pistons, and flywheel. So what you need are ones for a 460 Ford. Do a web search for "460 ford roller rockers" and you will get several hits. Lot of them on ebay but you may have a hard time finding only 8 of them. Here's a link to some info about the 3.7 using the 460 parts.

Re: Roller Rocker arms

Because roller rocker arms are much better than the traditional ones...

For an engine of under 200 H.P. , never rated over 4600 r.p.m.s, not demanding extreme acceleration nor decelleration.....I can think of many more most effective ventures other than roller rockers.

I've heard that roller rockers require a taller valve cover or a spacer under the original valve cover... Just another thing you may want to place on your purchase list...

Re: Roller Rocker arms

The whole goal of roller rockers is to minimize friction, and to open and close the valves quicker after holding the valves open longer. Because the duration of a roller cam is completely different than a flat tappet cam, the torque requirements of a very low rpm "tractor engine" will not be met.

Roller tappets will not work well in this marine application.

I have a 3.7 engine, and am familiar with its limitations. There's really not much you can do to improve performance. Just take care of what you've got, and be satisfied that it's economical on fuel.

I just wonder why no one's ever come up with a nitreous system for marine use to get a boat "on plane" instantly? All 4 cylinder I/O engines are so weak coming out of the hole.

Roller tappets will work fine in his application. They won't make any difference at all in the way the engine performs, but if it makes him happy and he has some extra money he needs to get rid of, I say go for it. The boating industry needs all the economic stimulation it can get!

You have to understand that you're trying to push a boat through the water with a propeller - you won't see any dramatic increase in performance as you would with trying to push a car on 4 wheels down the road with much less resistances...

I have the 4 inch heat exchanger, along with the alternator conversion kit. Let me ask you this, about how much extra horse power will I gain if I switch over to four barrell carb?
To spec tune-up, cam seals, 4" heat exchanger, alternator conversion, propped to suit application, perhaps the four-barrel conversion and aluminum exhaust components..

You never did say how many horse power your motor is now. I have the 3.7 lx in my boat and it pushes around 190hp depending on tune up. I run a 14.25x21p prop and trimmed out I am getting liike 53mph at 4300. Pretty respectable if you ask me. BTW the motor is completly factory stock other than cam seals.

On paper that's what it works out to. It actually didn't work that well in the real world. Kinda bogged them down.

Re: Roller Rocker arms

It is the 165 HP rated one. I am currently running a 14.25X19p SS 3 blade prop. I will be installing new gauges in the boat soon, the ones I currently have in her at times dont register correctly. You can look at the tach and notice while idling down the riover it is jumping all around from 1,000 all the way up to 6,000 and back and fourth, so im gonna be getting some new ones. Im curious on how your able to get youir boat to run 53 MPH, mine only seems to run around 20-25at around 4100 RPM's, with the current gauges installed anyways

Our V-20 Wellcraft with the 170 H.P. version runs 27mph @ 2800 r.p.m.s, GPS verified with a back-up tach. (14.25 x 19p x 3-blade aluminum prop) Smart Tabs and slightly trimmed.

Sum'tins wrong if you frgures are verifiable.....wet foam, slipping prop, ventilation, etc.
