I had my boat in at a repair shop and the mechanic told me that I am needing a master control switch for the motor. What happens is, the engine fires and runs but when it starts to get a little warm after 15 - 20 min. of running it just dies. Will not start. It will turn over but will not start. After you sit for 15-20 minutes the boat will fire back up and run again. I have no knowledge about motors but I am very mechanically inclined. What would your suggestion be? This is a 1992 Force 150 outboard. I have been out of the water with this thing for over 2 years trying to find someone with some knowledge on how to get this repaired for a reasonable cost. Don't really want to go spend $12,000 on a newer motor when this one has good compression and everything seems to run okay when it does run.

If he is refering to the switch box he could be right. Electronics can fail when the get heated up.

Are you losing your spark after it warms up? I had a similar problem with my car at one time and found that my ignition box quit working when it got warm.

That sounds exactly like a typical capacitor failure. Capacitorsare basically two conductors separated by insulation (dielectric) heat or age can break down the dielectric. They heat up and shortthrough the dielectric, then when cooled they operate until they heat up and short again.

Your ignition system is CAPACITOR discharge (CD) ignition. So it is very likely that you have an ignition failure. Only problem is it requires special tools to diagnose.

Diodes are real famous for that. Back in my TV repair days we use to carry a can of freeze with us to isolate the cuplrit.
