I used to belong to a club that had the rifle range backstop up against a steep hillside about 30 feet high. Directly at the top of the bank is a public road. No idea how they ever got permission for that set up. As far as I know they are still using it. I never shot on it. They had a nice archery 3D course I used.
Was the he road there first ? Years back I belonged to a gun club that had been there for over 75 years. Tall terms and banks with nothing behind them for miles. Then along came some developers and created some neighborhoods about a mile behind our berms. Then those little communities filed lawsuits against the gun club.....these went on for years, one after another even though the club was grandfathered in as being there first.....the lawsuits kept coming until the club almost went bankrupt. They gave up and severely restricted and limited the range operations until it wasn't worth the trouble anymore. I moved to the country and built my own range.

Road was there first. You can literally see the cars driving past plain as day.

Same thing happens to airports. Build them miles from anything. People move into the area and start complaining about the noise. Many mew rules are created for the airport and it eventually closes.

Yeah, up here a lady bought property, built a house, fully aware that the gun range was 1.5 miles away. And she works for the dnr. The house is not in line with the range at all. But she was sending a petition around to make them move the range as the noise was too much. Wtf? Nobody sighed her petition! I use that range myself, and it’s out in the national forest miles from anywhere.

That’s happened here as well. They didn’t get very far with their complaints. The gun club opened in 1911 and is still going strong.

When I lived in Nelson there was the Cable bay rifle range then some rich cnut from scotland moved in and in the end he got it shut down . He only lived there for 6 months out of the year.
I was once at a local range (go pick up the key sort of access ) but in spite of all the flags and signs ,while shooting at 600yards (308win) I had a family of 4 pop up and go inspect the targets that not 30 seconds ago I had been putting holes in , and wouldnt you know it was all my fault ....they rang the police ....who attended and much to my delight (an relief ) rounded on the family , the cop really lost his 5hit at them ......while I watched .....not smirking at all 😁
