First, fix the trailer. :) obvious but necessary...sorry.

You can use fillers to repair the damage. If you are planning to go back with gelcoat, use polyester based fillers. If you are going to repaint, I recommend epoxy based fillers. If any of the damage goes deep into the laminate under the gelcoat you will need to grind out the defect and add back resin and glass to maintain strength. Looks as though most of it is cosmetic. But I would take a close look at the keel for weak spots if that scrape goes deep.

Intelux makes an epoxy filler called Watertite. Good stuff

filler is my friend

Hey, cheers for the info. I have already purchased some new rollers for the trailer, but I need to fit them. I was going to jack the boat up whilst on the trailer, fit the new rollers, then lower it back down. Then i can get it off the trailer without any more damage!

I think you are right about it all being cosmetic, however until I clean up that area a bit more, and check it fully i can't be 100% sure.

I haven't looked at this filler stuff yet, i will in a moment, but I was considering grinding it down to the glass, then building up some more layers with thin matting and more fiberglass, so it will keep its strength. Then, after sanding it down to the original shape, apply gelcoat, sand again then paint...

would that be overkill?

Cheers

Yes overkill and so so much work, too.

I can tell you've done a lot so far. You are taking the paint layer off down to the gelcoat. What's important to keep in mind is that as you do this, you are sanding some areas flat and gouging into other areas and making more work for yourself. It's hard to see it now, but it is happening. Then you will have to fair all that out before your top coat.

If you fix the issues, gouges, scratches, etc, fair it out, then rough up the paint and prime, you can paint over the top of the old paint and it can look great.

Good luck.

Hiya, Yup, taking it right back to the Gelcoat. I made this choice because I knew that there was some work needed doing, plus the paint was already off and in pritty bad condition in some places. With this in mind, I decided to just take my time, and do the whole thing from scratch to make sure I got the best possible results.

I know what you mean about the sanding flat etc, I have considered this, and my solution was to hand sand with very very find sandpaper to smooth out any problem area's once the main sanding to the gelcoat is finished and my repairs are also done. I figured doing this would give a good surface for the paint to go onto.

The old paint really was in bad shape in some places, in fact most of the underside didn't have any paint and had already gone back to the gelcoat. I do realise its a lot of work, but I hope that all of the work will be worth it in the end :)

Spent a lot of time on this today. im now about 70% of the way through the sanding. The underside needs to be sanded next, but most of the paint has already flaked off underside, so shouldn't take too long.

Here are some updated images.
inside view at the moment

Inside the nose of the boat, considering a fuel tank here as its about 7ft long.
