So hi everyone,
im new on this forum and this will be my first post.
i mainly came on here to find out more information about outboard motors.
I stupidly mixed gearbox oil with my gas instead of the premix engine oil on one very early morning fishing trip. its a 1984 25hp mariner.it started up then quit out on me.since then i have got rid of everything that had the gb oil in and im now back with the right stuff. but its still kinda sluggish. is there any ideas or different cleaning mixes that can make this motor be back to normal?

Get a bottle of carb cleaner and add to the fuel, you may wind up changing plugs al

SeaFoam is an excellent product for cleaning fuel systems. Available at most auto stores.

Just to confirm -- you should use only two-stroke oil with the TCW3 markings.

Spraying something through the carb throat does absolutely no good. It doesn't get inside the carb. Stop at a boat dealer and buy their brand.

You have to be very careful putting things through the carb as they tend to scavange (clean) the oil off the parts and may cause scuffing. Follow the above advise.
You probably will better luck finding Seafoam at auto dealers like NAPPA, maybe Canadian Tire. Some of the guys in Canada were having trouble finding it and then all of a sudden they were posting different locations where it was stocked. Maybe do a search above.

Re: Not the smartest tool in the shed

Any NAPA store, Carquest or other major parts store will have a carb cleaner that mixs with the fuel some call it injester cleaner today, we use them ever sping in commissoning to remove any varnish build up thats what they are desiged to do. Companys like seafoam and there high powered advertisments have convensed some that they are a cure all problems, They ARE NOT. It will remove carbon almost as well a OEM products but in most cases is not any cheaper. While ranting I might say that beware of the syn and link guys that this sight has, syncronization seldom need to be done inless someone been tinkering and that happens sometimes, when the whole neighborhoods gets in there with their plies and screwdrivers but in most cases on this forum it's 2 or 3 guys, that couldn't explain what it even does, they are just padding their post count.

There's a carb cleaner I've used in the past called B-12 made by Berryman. I had good luck in one of my outboards before.

Has anyone used this B-12 and if so what's your opinion?

Laddies - I beg to differ with your analysis of SeaFoam. Anyone who owns an assortment of two stroke engines ranging from bikes, to chain saws, to weed whips to leaf blowers to yes -- outboard motors is well advised to run SeaFoam in every tank of fuel as a preventive measure. It does not have to be used at high concentrations but it can be if experiencing fuel system related problems. Does it solve every problem, of course not -- but then neither does any other similar product. There are times when only a carb rebuild fixes the problem. You obviously have your favorite products but there are far too many of us that use SeaFoam on a regular basis with exceptional results and it is not just "hype". And no -- I don't work for SeaFoam but I use a lot of it and It is currently less than $5 a can at my local farm store. And just so everyone is aware, it can also be used in four stroke engine oil and automatic transmissions.

Silvertip, Works good for an enigma I bet. NO single product will do all the things that seafoam claims it does, at lest not well. There are not many times that you have ever heard me recommend the quick fix products, the only thing I will nomally say is to pull the engine down and do the job right. If I have offended you and others about one of your favorite fixs, TO BAD. I am offended every day with answers on this site that a incorrect and can cost people additional money--Bob
