Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

and I thought this project was done:D.

I think there is always something to do on a boat, especially a rebuild (wow, it may never be truely be done). I guess that's half the fun for me.

I have a few questions about how you installed your rod holders.
Are your rod holders the 30 degree style? If so, should I cut the hole in at an angle as well so it fits the oblong shape the tube makes going in at 30 degrees? how do I cut that hole without trashing the paint job? and last should I put a plywood backing plate under the rail?

thanks

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

You are on the right track, the hole needs to be an oval. Mine are the same angle. I tried cutting a circle and quickly realized it would not work.

A backing plate is a good idea, so they do not have any flex. Kick the rod tips out a bit by angling the thing out when you install. A little bit goes a long way on that.

It helps to keep your lines from tangling:)

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

Slowly tricking out the Nassau. I've been working on fitting the the top I picked up for it ($50 came from an old 16' Starcraft SS). They had changed the frame though, putting the frame back to the way it should be took a little while to work out, fairly cheap to add length w/ tubing, and staighten there are a couple of good cracks in tubing where it got bent at one time (not in the best of shape but salvagable), but I think I have the correct length and position now. I will be using some rivet nuts to anchor the base hinge pins, then put a second set of rivets nuts in towards the back when want I to store out of the way.

Also, I got the rod holers cut in (cutting holes in my boat is always freaky feeling). Thanks goes to Huron Angler, for the tip on angling the rod holers out a little bit.

Now I just need to find a place to put the cool cleats I got off that Fabuglass. Although, I am considering selling them on ebay, along with the steering.

When I'm done I'll need to do some touch-up on the paint. I've put a few good scratches in the paint adding all the bling..... This project is not over yet.......

Yer gettin there!!! Good Buy on the Bimini!!! I think since I have learned this Sewing stuff, I might try my hand and making a new top for mine. The frame is in Excellent shape but the canvas has seen better days. The material should only cost about 40 bucks so I might give it a go. Your trailer looks like a GATOR. Is it? If so hang on to it. That's what I have and it is a GREAT trailer. You can get the decals for it and restore it if you want. Let me know.

Keep up the good work and you'll be fishing soon!!!!

Have'nt looked to closely at the trailer yet not sure what make it is (if are you refering to the one under the old fabuglass tri hull I cut up)". Its buried in snow right now, and I'll be on it this spring, if spring ever comes..... I think it will be a perfect trailer for my boat. The one under the boat now is just too big (Calkins I think). I have winch post all the way back and the boat is just about off the back rollers. Its a heavy duty trailer made for a bigger heavier boat. I'll sell it this spring after I get the other one ready. If turns out to be "Gator" I'll probly get the location of those emblems from you.

My top turned out to be in really good shape. It just need to be touched up w/ some vinyl dye to brighten it up. Never used vinyl dye before but I've checking around different forums and it seems a lot of people use it and have good results, so I'm going to give it a try.

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

I would like some opinions on trailers from my restoration group. I started working on the trailer I picked w/ the parts boat. Do I put on roller bunks or carpet bunks whats the advantages or cons of either???. I'm thinking of switching to the bunk trailer because the other trailer just seems like its too big. The winch post is set all the way back and its almost falling off the back rollers. Or, do I look for different roller set-up to mount to the trailer that's under the boat now? Opinions welcome.......photo's of both trailers below......
and thanks in advance....

How about swapping out the rollers for bunks on your current trailer?

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

that's a possibility.... the boat sits pretty high w/ full size tires on the trailer, I got it out for the one voyage at the end of last fall, and when its backed in at the ramp the boats not floating, its still high and dry, would'nt the trailer need to submerge more to be able to launch the boat (float it off)???..

Like I said before, Trailer #2 is a GATOR and a VERY desirable BUNK style Tilt Trailer with LIFTING Bunks. I would Definetly use that trailer.

Is there a Handle Mechanism in front of the U section of the front section of the trailer?

No, I was looking at my trailer, and I do NOT see the same mechanisim on yours

attachment.php

I guess yours does NOT have this feature. It is really Kool in that it actually lifts the bunks up and lifts the boat OFF of the center rollers after you have loaded the boat. Keeps the rollers from putting to much weight in such a small area and shifts the load to the bunks. It IS a great feature.

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

That sounds like a neat feature....

The trailer has 4 center rollers, the long bunks, and the front "V" bunk at the bow. The long bunks are a "fixed" bunk, however they are adjustable to what ever postion you wish to put them in. The bunks extened off the back of the trailer about 12 to 18 inches, the yoke is about 6 feet the trailer body is 10 feet, and tilts.

It's in good shape, buy some new tires, center rollers a new winch, or just a cable/rope/strap, paint, and its nice trailer agian.....

Yah, your current trailer set up is almost identical to what I now have on my Jet. My rollers are definitely coming off and bunks going on. She'll sit probably 8" - 10" lower after i do that.

I'd take a good long look at both trailers and setups and see what would be the best fit for your Nassau, sell the other for a little pocket change;)

I just looked at your trailer, looks like your just about falling off your back rollers (me too). I noticed you have 3 sets of rollers though. Mine only has 2. It only has the 2 cross members also. The frame is 3 inch square tubing, its huge.

Seilling one of them is going to happen, in fact not soon enough.... I found a nice project about 3 1/2 hours drive from me. An older aluminum Crestliner Cuddy I/O (just like the Starchief), for dirt cheap. I just need some extra $$ and a place to hide it from my wife, before someone else buys it.....

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

I wish I could help you out on the "hide it from wife" methods but, uh, yah, I am terrible with that sort of stuff. Yesterday, I pulled the Jet out of the garage and parked it in the drive to work on it some. My bride didn't know that I pulled it out, came home, thought it was a new boat, and smashed me with the fry pan.:facepalm:

No apology once she realized her error though. I think we both felt like I deserved it:D

Hey, photos when you bring home that Crestliner!

I'd say if you beat him up on price a little, sell one of those trailers you have there, part out that driveline in the Crestliner you might have yourself a free boat! Probably even make a little $$$:D

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

Progress has been made on the #2 trailer until the the weather turned for worse here, cold rain, ice , snow, and work of course that always gets in the way (10 more years and I can call it quits). But the trailer has been torn down, and I started sanding an priming. Tryied a $13 sand blast gun from menards and bag of blast material on some of the hard to reach places, works ok....

........... I'd been searching for upper shock bushings for my 1967 Merc 650, finnally found some to only have some sort of small metal plates shipped to me. Turned out that the numbers were changed from Mercury, and there for the wrong part. Needless to say it is apart that is no longer available, but some parts dealers still have some. Managed to order some under a different model number and year. $20 for 4 little rubber bushings, ouch!! but I got them......

So I primed painted the tilt assist shocks.
