Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

Is your Merc 650 an inline 4? My '72 Merc 800 is inline 4 and weighs around 240lbs, maybe it weighs less than you think?.

Yes, its an inline 4. You should see thing at WOT, it flies! I thought you should be able able to stand in the back of the boat and tilt that thing up but even at 240 pounds w/ tilt assist shocks it may be too much weight to do that.

Is that a video camera or a still camera that also shoots video?.

Its an old 6mp Kodak that shoots video. It takes great pictures for how old it is, all my photobucket phots were taken with it.

Sorry Bro but I ain't no use on the shocks.

It looks like you may be right,

I posted the question in the merc outboard forum, 29 views, not one reply. I'll give the local marina mechanic a call he was pretty helpful. Somewhere someone knows something.

I did, however, find a spare 67' Merc 650. Its on the back of a junker tri-hull for $300. The bad is they charge $150 to dump the hull at the landfill. Debating if I should buy it.

Very Nice - I had the same boat for my first...put the inline 4 Merc 800 on it - very fast!

A little more feminine paint scheme:

Sorry for the small hijack - but I had alot of fun with that little boat...very easy to work on, trailer...etc and goes like stink!:D

Yours looks great - very hard to do a dark paint sheme well!

Thanks, I noticed in your photos you had two step plates on each side of your boat, I only have one on each side. My ID plate said 75 hp max.. 80 hp, your boat must have barely touched the water at WOT.

Nice 68' Holiday by the way, very:cool: ....

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

I must have had the DEE-LUX version that came with 2 step pads....mine was a 66 and rated for 75.....but the extra speed kept me clear of the cops!...I loved that motor you could touch the key and it would start up and the sound was great.....the I/O in the Holiday tends to sound like a small concrete mixer.

I don't understand ratings ....how can NB 22' LL be rated for 110 HP 4 Stroke and a 14' G3 get a 150 HP 2 cycle?

Its funny that way...I have a hard time believing the fiberglass is stronger than the aluminum, but its possible. We're talking the same thickness, generally, on the transom wood. 65 hp plenty for my ride though, man, that thing jumped up on plane and just scooted across the water.

I'm not calling my restore done yet, either. I need to trick it out now, a bow rail, a horn, and radio. I'm also think of puting some wood step strips out on the bow I have access to some south american mahogany looking wood that never rots that wood loo real sharp as steping rails out the front of the windshield.

And I'm still debating on if I should buy that spare 650 merc, I'm really impressed w/ how mine ran (as short of ride it was). It needs tilt assist shock bushings, paint. Far from finished.

However, its time to start looking for a another project. Finding one cheap enough is always the challenge. I leaning towards a same year (66' or close ) in a travel trailer. Looks like it could be a fun rebuild too. Its that or a large Starcraft rebuild.

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

I finally sold the old 1965 75 hp Evinrude (not running) that came w/ my boat. I let go for $125. So now, I can look at the B/M/T w/ the match for my 1967 65hp Merc. Got the serial number from the owner and looked it up (a 1967 also). But that was 3 to 4 weeks ago. Hope its still available. It will be nice to have spare motor.

I can strip tri-hull, then cut it up. Sell what ever I can. Sell the trailer too after I spruce it up.

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

I got around to going to check out that twin motor to my 67' Merc 650 today(and junker tri-hull its attached to it) .

Scored big too! Not only does the motor look to be in nice shape, but few bonuses in the deal all for $100. Picked up a second navy style anchor, a second gas tank w/bad gas, Spot Light, some nice hardware, and the trailer is a tilt (might sell the one under the boat now since its over kill). I figure I salvage the windshield, the bow rail as well. Pill the rub strip and andits molding too, steering might even sell on ebay.

Boats are rarely an investment but you'll make money on that one:D

The trailer looks just a little rusty but solid.

I doubt I'll make money but I could break even, and have a nice parts motor. I would'nt mind finding a twin (or a like a 70 to 71 Jupiter with the better hull design) to my Nassau and make a white sister to the black one. that would be cool, the wife would make me sell one though.

I think you got a fabuglass deal there. Those cleats are COOL and would look pimp on your boat.

Re: Restoring a Starcraft '66 Nassau

Thought I'd post up. Its been awhile and not much done to the boat. Work, new windows and patio door for the house and the cold of winter puts a crimp in my boat time.

I managed to take the motor off and cut up that old tri-hull parts boat. That was a job in its self.

I picked up a tach, a horn, and 2 rod holders. I salvaged the spot light from the tri-hull. I got the horn, spot, and tach mounted, I just need wire them in now. The rod hoders need holes cut into the tops of the gunwales yet (hopefully without wrecking the paint). Tricking it out, thinking about a bow rail too.

When the weather warms up in about 3 months I hope to vinyl dye the convertible top I picked up for it.

All in all, I have so much to do and so little time.

So here's some photo' of whats new....

She will look nice with all the goodies installed...and I thought this project was done:D

I've got the same SS rod holders on my rig and I love them. Always out of the way and handy for rods or nets when you need one. I'm going to buy a few more on ebay I think.
