hay mike I just took a second look at your pics and right below that plate you have on there , the dark spots check them out really well , see how far you can stick a pick or a real thin flat head , and also I dont want to seam down adout the git rot , but what about the top part of the transom, there got to be 3 inchs up to the top, and how are you going to get that stuff up there without breaking the top lose ?? and if you have to break the top lose you might as well just go ahead and replace it !!! it up to you ,I just hate to see you go this far and have to redo it in a few years !!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh! and as far as removing the engine.... Tilt the boat so the motor tilts to the ground and just tip it off and rotate it onto whatever stand you've got for it, or whatever you are going to move it around on. I learned the hard way that removing a 70hp Johnson is even too much/ and ackward for 3 guys to do. We popped a 100hp Johnson no problem with 2 guys onto a boat this way.

Me again reds right on taking the motor off tilt the boat all the way down till the motor slides up and off , its really not that hard , me and my 16 year old , jeremy and my 12 tear old daughter callie got it off then carried it 50 feet or so and then lifted it a good foot off the ground , and it a 1962 1000 100 hp merc , love the tower of power !!!! lol John

Re: restoring a 1974 glastron

well guys i'm back for another installment of ...This Old Boat....lol
i got the old stringer out of the boat tonight and to my surprise the were not glued in place they just lifted right out and there was no padding or any sign of adhesive on the bottom of the stringers and the bottom edges were not even cut on a angle to match the hull!!!!. In my reading of many of these posts i thought that would create a hard spot and show through the hull or possibly hurt the hull, but it hasn't so far...lucky me i guess. so when i replace the new stringers should i cut the bottom of the stringers on a angle to match the hull and glue them directly on the hull? i am planning on using pl construction adhesive to bed them in to the hull the pl is a 100 waterproof and man does that stuff stick!!!! LIKE GLUE IT DOES....lol. i also done some poking around on the transom and it is in decent shape so my plans for it are to re-glass it in and add a extra piece of 3/4 plywood ( also glassed on both sides ) to the inside of the old transom and secure them together with the pl adhesive and use the lower motor mount bolt's and the outside d-rings bolt's and run a bolt through the drain hole to squeeze them together while the adhesive sets, and once it has set i will tie the stringers into the inside of the new transom wood and the floor and so on i think it will be pretty strong that way??? i need your guys feedback thanks for all the help..........Mike

Hay Mike , here is something ooops sent me
get lots of acetone, but you can get it locally.....dont forget glass bubbles.....(cabosil)....for repairing small grinding gouges and setting the strings.....
the cabosil from take on it is something you mix with the resin or epoxy and you put under the stringers , so you dont get hard spots , on the stringer mine were just floating there also and mine were cracked in two right where the cross member were, thoe mine looked like they were resined right to the floor in three spots , rotted off . had to grind the spots out !!! Cutting them on a angle mine were cut , and i am putting them back in mine .
The transom, the 3/4 pl wood sounds like it will beef it up, but if the transom is strong dont think you need it ??
The pl construction adhesive , I am not sure on , dont know if it has enough flex in it for the marine use ????
Where your stringer glassed to the transom ?? mine werent , and where the cross menber wasnt glassed to the stringers and where they cut the notch for the cross menber it wasnt protected at all from the water, just sitting there open to what ever water got in there , and it also didnt have any drainage to the back !!! I am going to add some to mine from the front to the back , going to cut some pvc tubeing in half and glass that to the center stringer.
Ok well it sounds like your well on your way have fun , John

WOW I just bought the same boat I too like the lines and the look Mine is in great condition only a few weak spots in the floor kind of intimidating to replace the floor so just gonna lay some 5/8 plywood over the exsisting floor and carpet.
