Looks more like red clay than rust. Did that motor come from the midatlantic coast?

Came from Ontario. Was told it was a kicker for most of its life. Uh-oh, I think I'm hijacking Saraha's thread. Better stop before the moderator stops us.

Okay today I took off a few more parts and started to organize parts.

My next ? is there was alot of crud under the fly wheel but I think most of it is from the oiling of the ring that moves to change the timing. There was a little thin oil right around the seal so should I replace it? Can this seal be replaced with out seperating the crank case? If not I might as well take it apart do the seal and hone it with new rings.

The seal is part #34

There's a seal puller that threads into the seal and a bolt to tighten to draw the seal out without damaging the cases. I've never tried it.

Do you guys think it would be worth the 20$ for rings and a hone/deglaze? It would be nice and fresh and I could inspect the bearings and rods at the same time. It's pretty easy to pull the two halfs appart. What do you guys think pull it appart or leave it and just do the seal.:D

Well, you're half way or more there. Then you'll know what you've got into it. Change the bottom seal while you're at it. Then I'll drop mine off when you're done.

Very nice work Sahara. With your skills, might as well pull it apart and inspect the insides...then decide if you want to hone it. If you don't want to mess with sandblasting, plain old EZ Off oven cleaner (yellow can) will take the factory paint/primer off down to bare metal. Reprime with a self-etching primer and then your choice of color and clear coat paint...but make sure the brands are the same. Mixing brands can mean mixing chemistry and that can lead to bubbling/crazing that means starting over again. I like the Duplicolor stuff...you can see some results at acmeoutboards.com. Good luck with your project...you are definitely on the right track.

I have that ez off because I found it's good at removing carbon. I think I'll take it appart because I want to because to me thats fun. I'll do that today since tonight i'm leaving with some freinds for puerto rico and comming back on the 22nd I won't be able to work on it for awhile.:D

I just go the carb, pull start and reeds/intake off. No broken bolts. Got all the bolts for the crank case out to and I'm seperating the halfs now.:D

Well got the power head appart. First I was happy because all the bearings looked good. There sure are alot of needle bearings on those rods.

Re: restoring a 1966 5hp johnson (pics)

Both look like they have had a major over heating. When I got the motor the water tube was 100% clogged that mad me worried. The old owner was dumb and didn't notice that. This is what hapened. Well both bottom rings are frozen. The cylinders don't have any deep scores and with a hone look like thay would clean up nice.

So now I would need two new pistons. Now I don't know what I whant to do.:(

The good news is that those pistons are still around: 376994 ss 386692. The standard rings are around 12-15 dollars a set #378432. They used them on the 5HP and then the 6HP up through 1977.

If the pistons have wear or chips at the line of a ring or at the top, you should replace them. You should replace all of the rings anyway.
