Re: Restoration: 1988 Wellcraft 170 Classic 3.0l Mercruiser Alpha 1 gen 1

Just using the pl to bond the pieces of ply together. Once that is dry I'm using 1.5oz mat with thickened resin to attach to transom skin then same with normal resin to build inner skin. If I drill holes and want to seal them what's the best way? Over drill hole with next size up then just coat inner hole with resin? Might just use 5200. I know poly will crack without mat. But I was also thinking if I over drill by 2 sizes up I could actually use a small piece of mat with resin and use a balloon to keep it tight in the hole. Blow up the balloon once everything is in the hole. I know I'm going to use this method minus the balloon for the outdrive key hole.

Any recommendations for this guys?

Also should if I do use any of the techniques. Should I do it before I install the transom? Or after. If I did it after and I use the mat method. I'd sand it flush

despite the crappy weather...if conditions permit tomorrow im gonna try to glass in the transom...which is stored inside along with all other wood out of the moisture. i was wondering tho, are there moisture perimeters for using poly resin? i mean obviously not when its raining or 100% but if it rains today, and its just cloudy tom is it okay to glass? or should i wait for a nicer day?

Depends on what the temps are for tomorrow....Do you have something over the boat? Tarp? I glassed in 35-40 degrees but had to heat everything up into the 70's so the resin would kick.

looking at 50 and sunny, i could mix the resin for a fast cure and because its cold it will take alil longer to kick. humidity shouldnt be a problem i was just waiting closer to saturday to look at the forecast. i try a couple sample batches, and also wrap the transom in 1.5oz mat to see the kick time.

Use some 500 watt halogen lights and shine them on the transom to warm it up.....lay up your glass and reapply lights.....it will kick :)

1.5% mepk should be fine

well i finally had sometime today, and it was sunny and about 65. after sweeping, vacuuming, and acetoning the hull. i applied resin to the plywood after sanding and acetoning it, then layed 1.5 oz mat. i mixed up my peanut butter, resin, fumed silica (cabosil), and milled 1/32 fibers(i ment to get the 1/4 as it is stronger and wont be as brittle or crack, so i hope the 1/32 will be ok.) i mixed it to PB consistency then added the catalyst. i applied the PB to the hull about 1/8 to 1/4 thick and put the transom in and started to clamp it all down. its been a long time since an update and let me say im just glad i was able to get into the boat. i want this thing done before summer. gas prices totally suck but i have a mercruiser 140 so i should be alright. letting the transom set up over night then pulling the clamps tomorrow night. im gonna start measuring and cutting the stringers tomorrow day.
