Last fall I took my outdrive off to be able to replace the gaskets and to service. Now its time to get her back on. My question is, is there a way I can replace the impeller on it before I put in back on the boat?

What about making sure it stays in neutral, do I still need to be concerned about that?

Not sure what that has to do with anything with the impeller, but when you put the upper back on the lower and have it together, before you bolt it down check to see if the shift shaft foot points straight forward when in forward. If it turns too far clockwise, then reset it and back off one spline.

I like to remove just the lower part because it is not so heavy then ;)

Don't forget to drain the oil first ;)

Ok got it. Another question is while I have the outdrive off, will it be possible to start the motor since I have a 3.7 mercruiser in it that uses a closed cooling system?

When you put the two halves back together you want to make sure it is in forward. Turn the lower shift shaft all the way clockwise and turn the prop counterclockwise til it locks. Use a bungee to hold CCW pressure on the prop and when you bolt it back together make sure the intermediate shift shaft (that slips over the lower ss) is pointed straight ahead. Leave the bungee on till you have the outdrive mounted (make sure the control lever is in forward). It would be unwise to run the engine without cooling water , not so much for the engine (the antifreeze will take care of that for a short time) but because without cooling water dumping into the exhaust the uncooled will damage the rubber parts including the upper exhaust bellows and shutters. You can feed water in with a hose stuck in the bellhousing water inlet hole.

Nope,... The heat exchanger, 'n especially the exhaust still need to see water flowin'...

Oh Yeah DO NOT lose the stainless steel washer that goes over the lower shift shaft, lots of time they fall off.
