Fuel gauge troubles

I have a 2002 X10. The fuel gauge hasnt worked since I bought it. It always read full. I installed a brand new sending unit and now the gauge doesn't move at all. The needle flutters around a lil but doesn't go above the E line. I'm assuming the dealer wouldn't have sold me a faulty sending unit (even though I got it online) but I'm not familiar with how these things work together. Maybe I need a new gauge, maybe a bad ground, but I don't know how to find out. All other gauges work fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fuel gauge troubles

both you guys could try something, pull both sender and gauge out of your boats. make up some jumper wires. set this up on a work bench and more sender arm up and down gauge should change from empty to full as you mve arm. then you will know that if it works on the bench. then you know to check your wireing.

Re: Fuel gauge troubles

Well I would love to say the suggestions helped, but not really. Some genius designed this thing with no arm (or magnet, like Malibu uses) to move up and down to bench test. Also it has 3 wires so the diagram doesn't help either. I did ground the sending wire to the gauge and it pegged on full, so I don't think the gauge is bad. I can't get my hands in to remove the gauge so I don't know what to do. I may just carry around some extra gas as stupid as that sounds...

Is the new sender the same design as the old one? U say 3 wires,on sender or gauge? That pic U sent shows 2 wires,if u hook them together the gauge should go past full with the key on.

Yep, it's the same exact sender. Moeller P/N 395-075. You probably can't see it in the pic, but it has 3 wires. The middle one is white. I couldn't tell you how many are on the gauge itself, I can't get my paws into the dash to find out. I used a jumper wire in the harness where it plugs into the sending unit. Touched the black/neg wire to the middle white/sending wire and the gauge pegged at full. I've checked the wires going into the unit and they're putting out 12V. Also plugged it in and shaved a little coating off the sending wire going to the gauge so I could check it with an ohm meter and its not putting out anything, whether the key is on or off. Filled the boat up yesterday thinkng maybe it was just too empty to read...not the case. I don't know what else to do.

Re: Fuel gauge troubles

Those senders are electronic hence the three wires. The sender needs +12 volts with the key on, ground, and the third wire is the "send" signal to the gauge. At the gauge you have the same wiring that my diagram shows.
