Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

I had the same problems of no charging and no tach on my 89 Johnson 150gt. Watching this thread provided many tips for troubleshooting. Stator and r/r tests were good and cleaned all terminals etc with no improvement. Now the weird part. Coincidentally with above problems my 3 bank charger was only working on two banks and had odd light indications. I completely disconnected the on board charger and now have 14v at batt using dva and my tach works. Please note that during troubleshooting charger was not plugged in and I have not been to lake for full rpm checkout.
Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, I do not have a charger connected, I put a charger on it to charge but I always remove it before I run it or perform any tests.

I am glad that this post is able to help others. Good Luck.

Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

ok, I disconnected the "Red" wire and it had a reading of 3.4 Volts. I have not changed out the battery yet as my brother was out on the other boat so I did not have the otherbattery here, but it looks like the bnattery is not the problem any way. just not sure what is going on, also now the motor is running really rough and it seems my spark is very irratic so I am hoping the new power pack will corredt the running issue. just not sure where to go next with the charging issue.

I am at a loss, I can not find any information about anyone having this problem before. If I understand corectly, the 3.4 volt reading I have indicates the rectifier is "Bad". should I buy another rectifier. I can tell you this one was brand new out of the box and is a BRP brand and it did not work for even a milli-second after it was installed. This doesnt make sense...

Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

The 3.4v is a result of input AC voltage being rectified to DC but I can't remember if you've changed your stator out or not. Or pulled your flywheel to see if your flywheel magnets are good or not. I'm not saying you should do any of this. Your problem now is beyond my understanding of these motors. 3.4v dc is obviously too low but that output is only relative to what the AC input is and the rectifier circuitry. Normally, your 18-25 VAC (voltage AC) from the stator (Yellow and Yellow/Grey) to the rectifier (on terminal strip lugs 1 and 2 respectively) should provide AC to the rectifier and the rectifier does it's thing and outputs 12-14 VDC to te battery circuit. End of story. Normally. Unless your ground side is leaking 9-10v DC from somewhere, this is beyond me...your rectifier may not be "bad", it just may look bad on your motor. If you took that rectifier and it was "good" on another motor, then we're back to wiring/bad grounds/corrosion, etc...
I'm not saying what you should do or not at this point, just as an electrician by trade and industrial control technologist by profession, these are the steps I'd take.
You could always take it to a marine shop, but your budget would dictate that...
Hope this helps, you got a doozy going on but we're all trying for you...

Yes, I did replace the Stator, and the rectifier and my new power pack should be here tomorrow. I am going to try and install it tomorrow night and see what effect if any it has on the performance of the motor. and hopefully it will make things easier to troubleshoot the charging system. Thanks again.

could the terminal strip itself be contributing to this problem?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I do not see how, it is just a piece of plactic with screws to hold the wires together, there is no metal or any other type of contacts to it. The onlt thing metal about it is the screws.

i Hope you find the fix, i have a 115 thats doing the same thing. Its missing and doesnt charge. It puts out about 3 volts at the red wire when running to. It has a new power pack on it and it still didnt fix it.

Have you looked into the Carbs, That was my first thought was that the carbs needed rebuilding but it did not change anything. I am going to install the new power pack but I am not expecting any change. I will post results later tonight. If you happen to find a solution PLEASE post it on this thread, so I can try it as well.

Yeah thats the first thing i did was go through the carbs. It didnt help. new powerpack didnt help, and ive used a different gas tank with fresh gas. I dont wanna throw a stator and rectifier at it yet since it didnt help on yours.

Sounds like the exact same problem, I should have power pack installed i an hour or so, but after your post I dont have much hope..

Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

installed new power pack, as expected no change. I totaly have no idea what to even look at next, now the ignition key is not starting it or turning it off so I guess Ill be buying a new ignition switch to add to my collection of parts that made no difference.

Someone PLEASE give some other suggetions!!!!!!!

Anyone think the Timer Base could be the problem with the way it runs, the more I do and continue to have both problems the more I am convinced they are caused by the same thing.

I'm having pretty much the same problems and I notice a lot of people are we these motors. It seems more trouble than its worth and I have just about came to the conclusion of buying a factory reman motor and saving the cost of time, parts, and aggravation.
Its worth a couple grand more for me to go to the lake and not have to work on the boat anchor I call my current P.O.S.

Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

Wondering if the engine running issue could be caused by a vacume leak thru the small hoses that are all over and around the carbs, I know some of them are for the fuel primer system but if there was a small leak what would the symptoms be and what is the best way to find it?

is there anything else that controls the engine and or the charging system.

I replaced all vacuum hoses and rebuilt carbs... still no change, acted the same way as before.

magnets are all glue and or properly placed on flywheel. just went through this and replaced regulator and 1 magnet was loose

Magnets are fine already double checked when I was replacing the stator, I dont think that is a very common problem on this model.

Re: replaced rectifier and it still is not charging.

Is there anything that can short out the rectifier and would also cause the engine to run with a mis??
