I think we would all like to know why it was not charging..
What was the cause of the problem?
You replaced the rectifier a couple of times without curing it so we assume a defective rectifier was not the original cause.

What happen to the rest of the posts? they keep disappearing... I am missing at least 10 or 12 posts from this thread (and others). the last post I am showing is 212, and I know there was 220 a little while ago.

apparently the harness was creating some type of short, I found a spot that was missing all the insulation on the entire bundle of wires and they were all bare and touching each other. I replaced the harness and installed a new rectifier and it is charging fine for the moment.

I am not sure why the rectifier would not work on my motor but it did on another motor, but like I said it seems to be working fine now, the tach is even working now.

Good stuff here, I probably dont know anything, but I read somwhere (i.e maybe just on older models) that an outboard will not effectively charge until a minimum rpm is met, which is usually at a higher number -close to WOT..........

Please see my post for Johnson 50 hp bogging down.........thanks

That contradicts what was said in an earlier post.

The charging system does NOT kick in at a magic rpm above idle. It will charge at idle; it will charge at WOT. But if the battery does not need a charge, it will not charge. This is unusual, the battery will almost always need a charge. The reg/rect determines whether or not to charge based on the battery voltage, and how much current the battery is absorbing when running. You may see a slight rise in the charging voltage with higher RPMs, but that is what the reg/rect does...it regulates or squelches that higher voltage down to the normal 13-15 volts needed for charging. It is not that critical....we are talking about a boat motor...not some medical device that measures millivolts heartbeat....

They charge as soon as they are started up, not as much as at higher throttle.
