I am presently removing the decking from my Glasstron 1968 V156, and have no idea what to expect underneath. Has anyone have pictures or advise to give me before I get in to far over my head? I have been reading other sites but it seems that this is the place to be for all my boating needs. Everyone is very helpful and I am also a DIYSer. Can Trex or Azec type materials be used for splines and stringers instead of conventional plyscore?

I don't know for sure as i am new here and to boating. I bought a nice looking tri-hull in march and just got the new engine running and enjoyed it at the lake a few times with my wife and kids.

I had some soft spots in the deck so i decided to pull the carpet and patch them. Turns out part of my stringers are rotten along with the transom. No way am i putting wood back in.

Coosa composits makes a water proof structural sheet which i am going to use for the transom and stringers and deck. I hate fiber glass and wood and for sure with the work this has made for me. Never again. The only down side of the coosa blue water 26 is the price all though i did find it for $215 for 3/4x4'x8'. I can get by with 2 sheets 5'x12' but the cost will be a little more.

Trex=NO. Non-structural.

38 special great name,

What would the procedure be for sealing seams around perimeters and butt joints?

Hi, I recently bought my first boat, I think it is a glastron v156 sportster around a 1972 model. It had been left out in the weather for 8 years.
I am going to replace the stringers and deck with marine plywood.
If your floor was rotting, your stringers are probably also rotting.
Here are some picture that might help.

Thanks Mav.

My boat looks similar to yours and it is also my first boat. Any problems in removal of old decking, seems like there is no bracing between the splines, I could not tell because they were so rotted, everything fell apart.

Termite rodeo here. My floor was soft an knew it needed replaced when I got the boat. But I didnt expect the carpet to be supported by this. Needless to say I will be replacing everything. The boat is solid and everything works, so i cant just trash it.

Welcome to iBoats!
First off Remember this. With Time, Money, Effort, more Money, Motivation, More Money, and BEER you can do anything.
Second. Determine how much you like the boat and how long you want to keep it. Compare the costs of New, and a Good Used one to the costs of repairing this one. Weigh the value of what you will learn from the experience and then determine if it is worth the Time, effort and MONEY.

IF so,

Third, If it is Worth doing, it's woth doing Right! At least that's what my momma said. ;)

Read these two post from start to finish
They are both heavy on Pics and details on every aspect of restoring your boat the PROPER way. They include resources for all the materials, tools, methods etc. that you will need to be successful.

Re: Replace deck on A 1968 GLASSTRON V156 TRI HULL

Woodman,
great shots thanks for all the advise, Came across 1 problem though. Anxious to start my project I started to remove vinyl and decking very easy very rotted. found 1 keel board amd 2 splines in between was 2"x4" pourous yes pourous styrofoam filling the complete cavity. this was found on the outside of the splines also. Also foam was resting right on hull. It also looks as if the plywood sat on the outer 14"s of the perimeter on top of the hull. On top around the perimeter is a 6" shelf of fiberglass with a groove down the center to remove water I am guessing which it looks like the plywood was sandwiched between it and the hull as it rides up the side of the boat. I have not seen anything like this in all the pictures i have seen on deck removal..Will see what it looks like at the transom end and bow end tomarrow. Any thoughts give me a hollar, Phil

Mav,
On the right side of your boat(2nd pix) I see fiberglass sticking out with a shadow line underneath. did the decking fit between that and the hull or are you going to cut it out along the perimeter and up the side? I have the same thing and was wondering if it needs to stay or come out? Thanks, Plaz

Plaz

Here is a photo of the perimeter of the deck.
picture.php

The deck fit below the lip of fiberglass sticking an inch out from the hull and wrapped around the step halfway along. The deck was fiberglassed all over and up the side. the lip is where i cut it back.

I think the fiberglass shelf attached to the walls was used as storage in the original. eg Oars. Nothing to do with the deck.

Mav,
Thanks, that is exactly what I needed to know. My other question is, was the keel area filled with rigid or pourous foam? I am also assumeing that some of the decking sat right on the hull especially near the lip area?

Thanks, one of my favorite old bands.Lol

The same as using plywood with out the concern of making sure everything is well sealed as there is nothing there to rot if it gets wet. The fiber glassing i will do is solely for strength. I really do hate working with wood and have no plans on doing it again.

Worse yet is the itch i have from the fiberglass while removing the transom. Never again i tell ya.:)

Re: Replace deck on A 1968 GLASSTRON V156 TRI HULL

Hi Plaz,
When i ripped the deck up there was lots of water soaked foam blocks which were not attached to the hull. I've been reading around on the forums and find that a lot of people don't bother to put foam back in when replacing the deck. Maybe i will do the same as they hold water and hence add weight. However it might be required by law in your area.

Yes the deck was resting on the high spots on the hull nearest to the walls. The stringers and ribs gave support in between.

I am wondering how much water might get under the deck. Maybe i should put holes in the stingers and ribs to allow drainage to the splash well. These holes would need to be sealed somehow so the wood doesn't rot. I noted some drainholes in the most forward rib under the cap. I guess the foams was meant to soak it up.
