Removing impeller

Never owned a VP before .... have 2020. V6-280-C-N
after discussions in separate post, only remaining winterising task is to remove impeller.

I removed front plate, but cannot get impeller out.
I have tried for over an hour with various needle nose pliers, and it does not budge.

Am I correct there is nothing holding it on ? There is a female thread showing, but according to service manual it states it should pull out.

As Bt said it just pulls out, but many times its damaged when removed. I use a par of channel lock pliers.

The impeller will last longer if removed every year, but I just replace every 2 and not worry about it. To reduce the set, keep the belt off and give it a 1/4 to 1/3 turn every month

I’ll have to remove bench seat and rear panels to allow to get in-line with it and try again.. certainly could not remove it working at arms length.

I seem to recall that someone makes a puller to remove impellers. That said I’ve never removed mine for winter storage and just replace every 3 years or so.

The threads on the impeller is a possible clue,
You may need a 1/2 x 20, 9/16 x18 bolt or a specialty tool to match the threads to press the impeller off of the shaft.
Also don't loose the little o-ring that's stuck in the screw hole.

I seem to recall that someone makes a puller to remove impellers. That said I’ve never removed mine for winter storage and just replace every 3 years or so.
Wishing now I had not started .... never removed on any other motors.

Not sure it would be imperial size ... so far all screw & bolts have been metric on this.
15mm Sepentine tensioner, 9mm screws holding on pump cover.
is this motor all metric ? Or a mix

Volvo and others sell a $16.00 USD tool.
Google 3843948
Requires about 50mm of space in front of the pump.
Easy to use one handed.

Been doing some Googling ...
found details of 2 types of impeller puller.

This 2nd video mentions that you can use an M16 fine threaded screw. (3:42)

Anyone know if M16 fine is correct for VP, he mentions Sherwood, I’m not familiar with that make.

Easy to use one handed.
When I googled couple of responses say it’s for D3 engines ... do VP use common impeller ?
I tried several Volvo Spares sites ... my engine is V6-280-C-N none of the sites list this, they do list V6-280-N and V6-280-CE-N
On both of those they list Impeller kit as 21700445 when I look at this impeller on line it does not have a female screw ... which is very clear in the picture I took today. Though that could be a drawing limitation.

Anybody familiar enough with finding Volvo parts to confirm if that is the correct impeller (kit) for my motor.
In case needed my serial is A1101422

tge issue is when I Dona search on that on .. the items shown do not have a female thread .... just looked at 5 search results ... they all look like this ..->

I think you might be seeing that this tool comes as part of an D3 maintenance kit. If you look at the kit contents, I'm guessing you will find a different impeller in the kit. Diesel engines usually use bigger impellers like the ones in the videos you posted. But the part number I posted is from the Workshop manual for your engine.

Yes, 21700445 is the correct impeller kit part number. It's possible the pictures are showing the back side of the impeller or they are pictures of aftermarket impellers.

I wouldn't follow the instructions in those two videos you posted. The two jaw style puller should only be used when you are throwing away the old impeller, they can damage the bond between the rubber impeller and the metal hub. The screw puller they show won't work with your impeller because the threads in the hub aren't deep enough. And one of the guys say's to not worry about vane orientation, this is true for some impellers. But not all of them, especially the smaller impellers won't always straighten out.

I recommend against removing this impeller for storage. Volvo service protocol is 4 years or 200 hours ( whichever occurs first ) before replacement. We are seeing them last at least this long. Your time and money would be better spent inspecting the anodes in the exhaust manifolds and why the full throttle RPMs are so low in your commissioning report.

OH, please don't do this!
That part number is for the impeller only. Volvo doesn't sell impellers by themself. They only sell kits.
It's possible that 21700443 impeller is also used in kits for different pumps and so you might get the wrong gaskets/o-rings if you search that number.
Every 21700445 kit I have installed has a threaded impeller, just like your picture.

I have never removed impeller for winterising before, it was the dealer who said it should be removed to prevent a permanent set in the rubber vanes.

So ‘3843948’ would be the correct part for the puller for my impeller ‘21700443’. ...... I agree if I were buying impeller the kit is ‘21700445’

If I can’t get the puller I will have to leave it.

Interesting - I lodged a request with Volvo spares ... their response is :
"The impeller kit is VOP21700445
Although this impeller does have a threaded hub, there is no puller kit listed for it at the moment.
I have checked the 3 different versions Volvo Penta sell, but none of them are the correct size."

They can be tight, especially when dry. Try lubricating the sidewalls with a rubber tolerant lubricant such as silicone spray, or even water and pull it out with needle nose plyers in a rotational movement based on the direction of the vanes.

I just spent another Hr with no luck. Managed to borrow a pair of parallel jaw pliers ... now then have immense grip.
Still could not budge .... probably as I'm at arm's length so I am in effect trying to push pliers at full stretch, and not getting enough force.

Unless I can make or buy a puller - whole back of boats will need to come apart, coming, seats etc. ...... that looks a huge job.
Wish I had never started on this.

Concerned I may have moved impeller slightly so can't just put the cover back on and forget it.

Had 2 Volvo part specialists say no puller available one even said it does not have a thread so that is why no puller - even after me sending them picture where it can be clearly seen.

I measured the 'hole diameter' which would be equal to minor diameter of any bolt .... it measures as 17.35mm (~11/16)
In the second video above he mentions an M18 fine thread ..... but that would have a female minor diameter of 16.376 mm

Does anyone have the correct puller and can check on the thread ?

Hope someone would come up with the correct puller

I remove the pump before attempting to replace/pull impeller. What about removing the hoses so you can pull it out?
