remote throttle box shot? throttle cables junk?

hello...my problem is I bought a bass tracker that needs lots of TLC. One issue I have is that the Omc control box seems to push and pull ( throttle) really hard...I can see that the throttle cables are split near the motor. Also, the warm up lever barely moves the throttle linkage (not sure what this is called lol)...I am not sure if there is some sort of tension spring for the warm up lever that needs adjusted or if the whole setup is junk....I do know that the throttle box with new cables can be pricey...just looking for a quick fix for now and replace parts as summer goes on...thanks

Ayuh,.... I'd sooner think the Problem is the cables themselves,...

Cable replacement! Not hard and yes cables wear out. No quick fix.

OK..being its an evinrude 50 HP..just find those cables and that should take care of the stiffness of the throttle and warm up lever?

Ayuh,.... Disconnect everything, 'n see whether it's the cables, which it probably is, or the controller, or the motor,...

If the throtttle cable id frade I would replace it ASAP. Which should releave your problem. May want to take a close look at the shift cable as well, just cheap insurance now rather than whwn on the water and you have a complete failure.

Ok thanks. Ill start with both the shift and throttle cable. The old ones are not frayed but the rubber is sliced open and the cable is rusted. If the problem isn't there at least it was needed anyway.

I now have 2 in need of repair. One broke while making a repair. the other was picked up as parts.

Replacing cables isn't difficult. Just time consuming.

Anything I can do to check the throttle box to make sure it doesn't need replaced while I wait on my cables?

well ya have to open it up to remove the cables so while it's open give eveything a good look, Wipe down any grease buildup, check the plastic ends of everything, including bushings, then apply a small amount of grease to anything that moves. I use White lithium grease.

While it's open tale lots of pictures while you go so you know how everything went together!!! And don't remove more than you have to.

Could also make sure all contacts are clean and tight on the key switch, horn and anti reversre lock out.

Just take your time and watch what you're doing and everything shoud be just fine,

OK thanks bonz...I'll take it apart tonight if its not rainning. If i still have a problem after installing new cables and inspecting throttle box it must mean its in the motor linkages right?

Rigging the cables is important, needs to be done halfway between the forward & neutral positions otherwise it can bind up the controller.

What box do you have? With the throttle warmup on top or on the side?

I just had one apart today that has the warmup lever on top..

It is an OMC box with the warmup lever on the top to the right of the throttle. I have never had one apart so not sure what im lookin at. I can post a picture of it.

Sliced open rubber and rust on the cable:attention:, let me think, Maybe some electrical tape and Elmer's glue. :laugh::laugh:HA HA!! Replace them!!

Go on Amazon or Ebay and get yourself a parts list and service manual on the motor and remote. I just got them for my new to me 1977 Evinrude 70hp and they are chuck full of complete breakdown drawings. Worth every penny spent.

What Evinrude you got?

Post a photo of your remote.

Really no need to replace the control box because most any part can still be purchased. So look inside like previously stated and see what's up...
