Remmove Bottom Paint?

Buying a boat where the seller is about 1/3 done removing the bottom paint because he was going to keep it on trailer. However, I will be keeping it in a slip. Do I need to remove it all and repaint or can I just paint another coat over everything?

Depends on what it looks like, but in most cases yes. The best way is to remove it all, then barrier coat 3 to 4 layers and then bottom paint

He said he was removing it with oven cleaner and a pressure washer. Sounds a little harsh. Could that screw up the gel coat?

It cannot help it. Needs to be sanded prior to barrier coat in any case to remove residue.

Thinking of buying a soda blaster from HF. Will that make this job a little easier?

You will need a large compressor (50 Gal?) and lots of soda to blast the hull.

I used a 36 grit grinder to remove 10 yrs of A-F paint from my SeaRay. You will want to apply a barrier coat after removing the A-F paint, so minor gel coat damage is not an issue.

You will want to remove it all and put at least 4-5 coats of anti-fouling paint.

Follow the directions on the barrier coat, and apply the recommended number of coats, at the intervals required by ambient temperature. After all, barrier coat paint is epoxy-based and temperature helps determine cure time. Apply 2 coats of an ablative antifouling paint over the barrier coat. That will last up to two years, depending on the temp and kind of water you boat it.

PO actually removed about 2/3 of the bottom paint. All that is left is the hard stuff -- under and around the bunks. What is the best way to get to this area? I am a little hesitant to use the raise and lower jack and block method (especially since I never even tried it on my smaller boat).

You can raise the stern and block it up, but then you need something like a crane or wrecker to pick up the bow and get the trailer out from under.

Another way would be to hire a boat company to block the boat up.

Some drop the tongue, block the stern up, then raise the tongue and then block under the keel. Then drop the tongue down until supported by the blocks and weight off trailer. hen remove trailer tires and drop it down

Just leave the part you cant get to the way it is ,which is what I would do.Most algae growth is where the sun is,not on the bottom of the hull. In the Great Lakes anyway,not sure where or how long your keeping it in the water.

Another option, of course, is to make a professionally done repaint of the bottom a condition of the sale.....

Think I am going to bite the bullet and have the marina do it. I overestimated the size of my driveway and the trailer would be sticking into the street. I just can't keep it there for a week while I am working on it. I hate to pay someone to do what I can do myself. However, this would solve the problem of towing 10,000 lbs with my 4.8L 1500 pickup. The seller is going to drop it at the marina and the marina will launch it when they are done. Then into a permanent slip.
