Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Not sure what the previous owner was thinking, there is one on each side in the transom. I think I will patch with some bondo to clean it up a bit.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Nice work. I've never been brave enough to replace a rivet on my TM...always use a hammer and bucking bar to retighten them. Another option on the top lip of the transom is to grind it down even with the top of the wood, then use the holes in the top cap as a guide to drill new ones. That's quite a gaping hole on the transom...wonder what they installed and why on both sides? I wouldn't used bondo to fill it...it will come off after awhile. I'd use a thin plate to cover it from the outside, with lots of 3M 4200/5200 underneath. Keep the pix coming....love to see TM projects on this board. I've got all the hardware off my TM Impala, now for the prep work before applying top/deck paint...work keeps getting in the way of my important stuff.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

No bondo.??.....I was hoping to make this look good without patches. Is there anything else that may work?? I was also thinking of putting some bildge pump outlet fittings so I could run the depth finder and speedometer etc through it. At lease it would look good. How about bondo on the smaller holes?

Unfortunantly the rivits have popped out of the bar they were holding and there is no way I can get it back in. I have to drill them out and I am hoping the screw and 5200 will not leak. The nylon nut should hold well. (fingers crossed)

I was taking a look at it this moring and still wondering why there were brackets on the corners for support. The transom appears to be sturdy. I may just try to put everyting on without the supports and see how it works and then if I need them will add them later.

I would think Marine Tex would work?

Maybe the last owner reinforced the corners, not wanting to do what you have done...replace the old transom?

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Well, I am getting closer to getting the transom completed. Both of my batteries are down after trying to drill the holes in the aluminum. I ran out before my last hole so I called it a day (My electric drill is dead).

This is what it is going to look like when fastened.

I still need to get some bigger bolts to hold this thing down. I think it will make a difference. I am a bit dissapointed on the side pieces, they would have looked better without the gap between them and the middle piece. Unfortunantly I am in a hurry and need to get the lift back to the guy who loaned it to me.

This was a booger of a job.

Looks great. How did you fill in those holes on each corner? Nice work.

Welll umm I know I was told not to but I am trying a fiberglass bondo (Don't feel bad, I never listened to my mom). If it doesn't work I will put the bildge pump outlets on there. The bondo is pretty solid.

Looks good. I've never worked with bondo in marine environment...it'll probably be okay, despite what others caution about delamination. How'd you get your kids to pose for that photo? It's classic.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

That was a pic I took to help the nice ladies at the state of Texas to give me my title. Here is the one I am going to use to thank her for her help. I was in quite a loop with the state bueracracy when I was able to kick it up a notch. IMG_00d03.JPG

I almost gave up and dumped the boat because it would have been useless to me but something told me to call and fight for it and has been worth the effort.
I just have to try to beat the bad weather and get the transom completed. I appreciate all the help I have gotten on this website.

I am having trouble with the dry brush technique when painting but it is only the transom and the splash well. Any new paint looks better than what was there before.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Do you mean the roll and tip method, where you apply with a foam roller and just feather over it with a brush to smooth it out? Would like to know cause I've got the top deck on my TX Maid sanded, just waiting for topside paint. Planning on painting using the roll and tip method unless I find/discover a better way.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Yes, I have seen it done with a dry roller as well as a dry brush and tried both. I think I waited too long to apply the dry brush because there were streaks left and the brush was sticky. From what I saw on the web there seemed to be alot of time between the application of paint and the dry roller. I used rustoleum and thinned with Acetone. It still looks nice but I was hoping for a little smoother application like the expensive stuff. I am sure there is a proper way to do this, just need to figure it out.

Re, I think you should thin with Naptha not acetone.
I don't think acetone is the right stuff for Rustoleum. Did the label say to use it?
Naptha will dry way slower than acetone and the paint should level out better.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Well I finally got the engine hung today. It is not secure yet due to lack of light and baseball so there are no pics either.

I did not take into consideration about the new aluminum brace and the holes were pre-drilled so the engine was not sitting onto the transom. It was about 1/2 in too high so I drilled out the holes a little bit and if finally fit.

I think once it is tightened down it should be fine. I am 3/4 satisfied with the work so far. There are some things I probably should not have done and there are some things I should have done.

I wish I cleaned the motor prior to sitting it back on the new transom, it looks a bit out of place. Anyway, pics soon to come. :D

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

My first application was flat paint and it did not look good. I did another layer of Gloss and it came out alot better. It seems to have been applied pretty smooth and layed down well. I did not try the paint and tip, this was prior to learning not to use Acetone. It was only the transom and the splash well. I am about to go and tighten the motor up and then I will post some more pics.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Here are a couple of pics from the back. One from each side. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.
IMG_0149.JPG

IMG_0153.JPG

The splash Well got pretty trashed when I put the engine and all the components together. 5200 is pretty hard to get off when it is tacky. wd40 helps.
IMG_0152.JPG

I had a problem with the 5200 dripping down when sealing the plate. I have never had that problem before.

IMG_0151.JPG

This worried me a bit. The lower unit has a crack in it. I do not see anything leaking but not sure if I need to be concerned about this or not.

Re: Rehab on 65 Texas Maid

Wow, looks great. Nice work. Hope mine turns out as good as yours...I'm just starting to paint my TM this weekend. Check your lower unit for water intrusion. Pull the bottom drain plug and loosen the top vent plug a little (if there is one), see if the lube inside is good or milky white like a vanilla milkshake. Milkshake means you have water getting in from somewhere, maybe the drain/vent plug donut gaskets, maybe one of the lower unit seals, or maybe that crack. You can have the crack welded/sealed but you have to use a welder who knows how to do it. I've seen folks seal up minor blemishes like that by brazing then following that with 5200...temporary fix until they got it welded or replaced the lower unit. You're making good progress...where you gonna take it for the shakedown cruise? Ray Hubbard? Lewisville? Lake Dallas? Should turn some heads wherever you go. Keep the pix coming.
