Recolorring navigational lenses

The red/green navigation light on my 1960 restoration boat is a single light that have red/green lenses. The lenses have no cracks but the color is faded to almost clear. Is there a way to recolor the lenses.

This link talks about coloring clear glass bottles, may be able to do the same with the boat lenses.

If the color is faded out I'm thinking it may be plastic? I might suggest some colored nail polish in the inside, lots of colors are available and I think they tend to be trasluscent in the right kinds. Just an idea - that is an old trick for coloring instrument panel lights red (paint the bulbs).
