+1 on the Alpha One, in fact they are still being made, in the form of A Gen 2's. Personally I wouldn't do all the work switching over to a MC set up. Also the keyhole is a little different as well as the top 2 bolts are higher up on the A1 that the old MC.

I have the 1974 Starcraft Cruisers brochure that I got from the dealer new. The Islander 21' was made quite a few years from the mid-60s through the 1970s at least. Recommended maximum horsepower in 165, in the case of both OMC & Mercruiser meant a 250 Chevy straight six with a 2-barrel. I would think a modern 4.3 would also be a great engine to repower it.

The Islander 21' had a bright blue hull, white deck, a pair of pedestal seats and a clear rear deck area (great for salmon fishermen with downriggers); the Islander 21 Mark IV had a black hull, silver deck, red interior with sleeper seats & stern seats, plus a stern rail and ladder.

Nice not having that pour in foam to deal with isn't it? Kinda neat seeing those dual carbs, are they single barrels?

yes, I believe they are single downdrafts. Nothing I have seen before. Well until now.

Out comes the old Fuel Tanks

Out comes the Rotten Floor

I should be able re-use about 70% of the old foam. It was in decent shape except for a couple small pieces way down in the bottom, and the one large block.

You might look at using all new sheet foam. It is much better at repelling water. It will be closed cell.

The fuel tanks look to be in good shape from what I can see. Is there some kind of padding material stuck to them?

I know it's a big expense to refoam with the new rigid board but the floatation it adds in comparison to 40 year old styrofoam has been worth it to me in my rebuilds. My old styrofoam was ate up and worst of all it stunk really bad. :yuck:

I might go with all new foam, not a decision I need to make for a while. I was told there is someone close by that custom cuts closed cell foam for boats and it is fairly inexpensive. Boats = inexpensive...I will believe that when it happens.

The fuel tanks are in decent condition. 1 is really good, the other had fuel left in it and has some minor corrosion in the fill tube. I might clean them out and re-use, depending on the cost of the poly tanks. The padding is a insulating sheet glued to the tank. I think it was due to how the tanks were mounted in the side of the hull.

Wanna buy a bridge? LOL

Sheet foam isn't all that expensive and really easy to cut to shape.

It might not be expensive down there but, $30. for a 2"x 2'x 8'sheet up here really sucks.

The penalty is a bath in aircraft stripper - It leaves what's left of your skin sooo smooth. :faint:
