My understanding this kid was a state parks employee. Don't get me started on OSHA and wildfires and protecting woodland firefighters.

If they started doing that, the state would have to care. Much easier to have like 80% of your fire fighting force be entirely unpaid as then it's easier to turn a blind eye... yeah don't get me started either...

We are in a drought in my area of PA. I’ve never seen the local reservoir as low as it is right now. A couple pictures of launch areas where the docks are high and dry. No rain in sight for next ten days.

looks like a good time to go hunting for arrow heads or fossils, maybe a metal detector for lost jewelry.

As a volunteer, if we avail ourselves there is plenty of training. Wild fires can be quite dangerous ... between wind shifts, rugged terrain, and lack of water, oh and don't forget exhaustion and heat. Special care is needed, but sometimes that care is lacking.

As for arson, that is sometimes hard to prove in a wildfire, but sometimes it is very easy ... like when you find the flare that started it. Have had too many wildfires started by volunteers because of the rush they get fighting them. As for me, when I was younger I was all over them. Now I just let the young bucks do the grunt work ... been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.

In the local reservoir a picnic table was exposed that washed down during a flood a few years back. It was from a VFW about seven miles away. When they went down to retrieve it a gun was found nearby. That state police took the gun.

I worked for DNR Forestry for 23 years. I covered the state as well as 2 countries and 11 states on wildfire. I was a ground pounder, an engine boss, crew boss, water handling specialist. I would go west as a leader of a 20 person crew multiple times every summer. I have been on a wildfire every month of the year. When I started the leaders told us all the nasties will clear your body in 2 weeks, by the time I retired they told us we needed to shower and wash our gear and clothes after every shift.

I will never forget the good times and things I got to see working wildfire, not sure it was worth parkensons disease and liver failure.

Or the guy firing incendiary shells into the berm of a range during a statewide fire ban... Sometimes they make it pretty easy...

Just (like 4 hours ago) had 2 fires started along the major highway going through here ... about 2 miles apart and called in about 5 minutes apart ... my guess is someone throwing matches or other incendiary devices out the window of the car as they drove by ... too close to each other for discarded butts from the same vehicle ...

Do you have peat moss out east? We do in Minnesota and it is a burden to deal with.

It's native to this area but I personally don't see an abundance of it around me. Down further in the pinelands it is more common. I typically just see regular moss.

We are finally getting some much needed rain here and most every one I have seen today is complaining about the weather.
