Pulling outdrive question????!!!

What gear does omc cobra go in to remove the outdrive to inspect/ replace bellows and gasket?? Thanks in advance for any help.

OMC uses a fork and pin setup, any gear is acceptable but you should put it in F to install it. This way you turn the prop shaft to line up the inputshaft splines

IF???? you drain the gear oil??? make sure you fill it from the right place!!!
They fill from the side of the drive about 1/2 way from the top down.
If not filled properly, the drive will self destruct and cost lots of $$$

Depends on the year of the drive. Joint venture drives, like OP's, fill from the bottom.

Yep just think of the joint venture drives (hump on top of upper gear housing, not flat like a pure OMC Cobra) as the same as a Volvo SX. The similarities are really just in the transom mount, the drives themselves are totally different.

So now we still need to see if its a joint Venture. At least half of 94 boats don't have the joint venture drive.
Here is pictures of it. . Anyone know which one it is?

joint venture is what you have
other way you could tell is if the raw water impeller is mounted on the engine, if it is then its a joint venture drive. The pure OMC Cobras had the impeller in the tail end of the upper gear housing, both the dog clutch ones the rare cone clutch one.
no gasket between drive & pivot housing.
just coat the part of the bearing carrier that pushes into the end of the bellows with marine grease, coat that part of the bellows as well and the whole mating surface of the upper gear housing and pivot housing, that helps keep it from corroding together.
Keep in mind that you have to disconnect the shift cable (its under that plastic cover that says Cobra on it) before removing the drive, and you will have to re-connect it and properly adjust it after you install the drive. On the pure OMC Cobra design this is not necessary, they used a shift fork and bell crank that fit together when you install the drive. What you have is basically a Volvo SX painted in OMC Charcoal Grey paint.

Great. Thank you. I removed old bellows. Clamp was very loose on top one. Also didn’t see any adhesive. Are you suppose to use adhesive when installing them ? There was only grease on top one bearing side! ???

well you will hear different stories on that. I know in my OMC manual (for the pure OMC model) they did say to use OMC Gasket sealer on the flange of the gimble housing. So that's what I did. But some have said that Volvo says no sealer necessary. I coat the part of the bearing carrier that presses into the bellows and the bellows itself, this helps make the seal and keeps water out. Clamp screw should be between 1:00 and 2:00 position.
Here's some pix of the old bellows I took off a few years back....see the asymmetric design? and the ridge in the second pic has to fit in the slot in the gimble housing flange groove
3rd pic you coat that whole lip of the bellows with marine grease....
Last pic shows where to coat the bearing carrier with marine grease, yours will look a bit different but same concept.
I like OMC/Evinrude triple guard grease. Does not wash away and sticks like crazy. I also use it to hold that oddly shaped o ring in the pivot housing in place so it does not move when installing the drive. I use it on the impeller housing o ring on the pure OMC Cobra also because those like to pop out of the groove when you are installing them.

No adhesive but you do what the instructions that come with the new bellows says. They change their minds occasionally. . You want to use the Volvo bellows since they have fairly recently modified them to be more of a plastic material.
