Yep they changed from the original style some years back so follow what they say.

I can't even remember the last time I used adhesive. I change my bellows every 5 years so I have done them a few times!

Well if the flange on the gimble housing is in good shape with no corrosion you probably don't need it, but on older boats used in salt water it might be helpful.
Bruce I see you sold the Volvo and went with Mercruiser, how do they compare? Cobalt is a beautiful boat. For me though no more sterndrives, I have to have outboards in the future. I'll get my small block Chevrolet fix with a hot rod of some kind lol.

Bruce I see you sold the Volvo and went with Mercruiser, how do they compare? Cobalt is a beautiful boat. For me though no more sterndrives, I have to have outboards in the future. I'll get my small block Chevrolet fix with a hot rod of some kind lol.
I haven't owned it long enough to know. I do know I am going to love the electric shifting and throttle. No more cables between the helm and the engine.

I believe Volvo also has that too now.

And since it is going to be stored in a possible freezing area now(although inside) going to like the easy draining of the block.

This boat is so easy to work on...can literally jump into the bilge and lay on my side next to the motor.

So that model I have the lower unit gets filled from bottom up or from center? Sorry for so many questions. Just use to my Johnson and evenrude outboards. Want to get it back together correctly.

Bottom. Pull the vent screw behind the shifting mechanism. Once the oil gets to that level it is full. Then you put in dipstick, that vent screw and put in the fill/drain plug at the bottom. Then remove the dipstick and recheck level without screwing the stick in. Should be in the middle of the flat area at the bottom of the stick. Don't overfill...that will cause harder shifting.

Volvo Penta Gear Lube


Its getting harder and harder to find at a reasonable price. Good thing it only uses approx 2 qts.

Also, make sure the drive is level when you're filling it.

Ok that’s a good tip. Thank you again. Have another question ..... where does shift cable bellow go? I didn’t see one when removed it????

That's what makes it! easy engine access.

Ok that’s a good tip. Thank you again. Have another question ..... where does shift cable bellow go? I didn’t see one when removed it????
The bellows on this design, is actually at the top of the tube where the shift cable comes out in the engine compartment, it doesn't need to be replaced, until you replace the shift cable. Totally different design than the Merc Alpha shift cable bellows.

There are no bellows on a Volvo(Cobra SX)on top of the tube. Just a little grommet/cap with a hole in it...if its even still there. It doesn't get replaced.

agreed I'd use their stuff, since the cone clutch in the joint venture products is a Volvo design. I have head of problems with the cone clutches if you use others.
Pricey but its a once a year expense. Same was with motor oil etc. I use the Merc 25/40 motor oil because I feel it protects better and I use the Merc High Performance gear lube (have been for over 10 years works great in the Cobra)
