Getting my Impeller installed today on my OMC 120hp 2.5L with stern drive from 1974. I was wondering since I have the garden hose hooked up to the block and water comes out on the back end of it as it runs. Does it have to be submerge under water or will my set up be safe for it not to burn out? Also would getting those ear muff adapters work better?

Howdy,

I am not all that familiar with that model OMC.

If the water hose you have connected DOES NOT put water directly to the raw water pump FIRST, you will destroy it quickly (less than 1 min or so)

Using the "Ear Muff" adapters will allow the drive to pick up water much the same as having the drive in the water.

You either need to have the flushing adaptor on the trunion cap, or you need to submerge the leg in a large bucket of water. The water pickup on these drives is just above the propeller on the underside of the cavitation plate. It's about a 1" round opening and should have a stainless mesh over it. Muffs won't work.

It's the round hole on part# 65 on the following diagram:

cooling system flush tee -$5 at Canadian tire - tee it in
turn the hose on full
water will flow both ways - into the engine, and back to lube the impeller vanes
and any time you want to test your impeller before heading out into the bay, you just crack that cap open a touch with the engine idling and water should spray out like mad

HS: I used a cut down blue plastic drum on mine once with the water level about halfway up the upper gearcase (about 6-8" lower than the level when the boat's in the water as in your pic) and it primed and pumped no problem. I'm sure there is a level at which it won't prime as you suggested, but a large enough bucket/barrel will work.

That flush T is a great idea though for those that don't have the adaptor on the trunion cap! :D

I dont understand the love for those things
my adapter was one tenth the cost and I can use it to check impeller performance while out in the lake

Way more convenient for one thing. The adapter was cheap too!

Hi Sterndrive, I know it's been 12 years since this post on thread but still..thanks for the info!
Not too many places for info on these drives. I didn't think about them backflowing like that!
Hope you're still at it, we need you.
