Sorry to see you were not joking , anything can be fixed. If you have not checked out my thread have a look and see the size of delamination I fixed. Check out the picture of after the stringer was put back in. If I never showed pictures of the repair , when I get this boat done no one will know there has been a repair done. Unless I don't do a good job on the outside, but I will not say it is fixed until I am happy. Again don't worry.

i cant help with the tank, but i did find a similar "oops" in mine while surveying the bottom hull.
PICT2177.jpgPICT2178.jpg
PICT2191.jpg
after grinding i realized the deck and stringers would have to be replaced, so i deferred this fix until i had the inside cleaned and prepped.
should be nothing to it....grind out 4" or so each side, the alternate csm/1708 till you get the thickness you want.
i had a pic that wood made for me to better explain the layup, but cant find it now.

happy new year!

Howdy mrshake,

I have been following your thread while lurking in background...

You have scored yourself a real nice boat and I am sure you will have one serious sweetheart of a marine vessel when you are done.

Don't feel bad about the hypothetical through the hull lacerations...

I have approximately 7 or 9 or more, hypothetical self inflicted, such oopsies!, and another several dozen or so perforations, made by PO's and the Factory, that will need bandaging...

The fuel tank, if it is aluminum and if it was hypothetically damaged, can be properly repaired by a good welder...if its plastic, you might be able to score a cheap replacement on CL...just make sure either route you follow, that it gets pressure tested for leaks...

Rest assured that with the guidance of the Jedi-Master Boat Gurus here, and a little sweat, blood, itching, cussing, and effort on your part, all will be right with the world once again...

Best wishes to you and yours this New Year.

Re: Project "MyLiner" / Deck, stringer, upholstery replacement, maybe more on a Bayli

Quick Update on this weekends work besides what you've seen...

Saturday/Sunday revolved around getting the deck out (as seen above) and then working tword getting the tank out. I have the deck cut away to expose the tank... Sunday and Yesterday (monday) were spent siphoning out the fuel. I've gotten 15 gallons out so far, hopefully that is all.

This tank appears to have been partially glassed in. It looks like from the front bulkhead in front of the tank, and the stringers on the two sides, here is a think layer of, maybe sprayed in chopped strand and resin. I think I'm going to have to trim that back to get the tank off. You can see this in the pictures of the cut in the tank.

That, unfortunatly, is all I got to.

Once the tank comes out, I'll get the rest of the deck cut out and see where I am for sure.

Holly smokes!! Did you break in to my garage and take my boat?

I've got an 1989 Capri 5.0 and I'm getting ready to start my project as well!

Where in Illinois are you from!?

Re: Project "MyLiner" / Deck, stringer, upholstery replacement, maybe more on a Bayli

ok.....

Where to start......

First off.......yep......that is a capri....lol.....with rot in all the usual places !

ok....as far as the stringers being wood....they may or may not be....it depends on where and when it was assembled...
it was right in the middle of the conversion years.

if they are wood and lightly glassed over.....and they are bad....of course.....out they come. if glass....just leave them.
(who cares if there is a little water in the foam under the stringer shape.....it is the glass that is the stringer....and the foam has nothing to do with the structure of the boat.

that tank must be pressure tested. jb weld will not do the trick forever....kinda like duct tape !

The tank should have two flanges on the ends.....those should be screwed into the bottom of the hull...(there will be little blocks of wood there). cut any foam around the tank...and it should pull right out.

As far as your motor.....that looks like a stock package....the only way to tell if it is is to match the serial numbers with the hull...but most of the omc's had the fords.

one thing about the seats......you can leave the base on and remove them.....you just kinda angle that bar slightly sideways by twisting on the seat...once you get one side out.....the other is a breeze. takes about 10 seconds.

the interior panels of upholstery will be screwed in ... just feel for screws in the folds of the panels.....they will be there.

well....post pics of the stringers as soon as you can......if its obvious to you that they are wood.....do some core samples by taking a drill bit and drilling into them.....then look at the shavings.....the same with the transom.

dude, your advise is awesome!!

I'll get some detailed pics of the stringers taken this weekend.

As far as the gas tank, the JB weld was just to seal up the hole to stop the gas fumes from filling the garage. You say there are flanges on the hull on the ends... one end is up against the rear bulkhead from the ski locker... how would I get to a flange there?
In terms of getting the tank fixed... would a radiator shop handle it (they commonly are a place to take motorcycle tanks) or is there some other kind of shop to look at?

I tried to take the base off the seats, but on the passenger side, they would NOT come off, tahts why I ended up going to the bar at the bottom there.

Good info on the side panels!!!! In terms of core sampling the stringers and transom, I'll be doing that soon. My goal right now is to get the tank out so I don't damage it any more!!

Thanks again for the wisdom oops!

you can get to the flange from the inside fo the motor well i think....(it was a few years ago when i did mine)

a rad shop might be able to dip the tank....but it depends on how big there immersion tank is.

Hey guys, don't abandon my thread, I promise I'll actually get some work done soon... hahaha

Having a 9 month old really eats up your time... and its not like you can just run out to the garage and grind fiberglass while he sleeps... cuz you have to shower once your done.. I can't even imagine him getting any glass on him... a scratchy cranky baby!!

Anywho, I'll try to get some stuff done here this weekend, though I am brewing beer this weekend, so again, time is limted. SOON.. I promise!!

Re: Project "MyLiner" / Deck, stringer, upholstery replacement, maybe more on a Bayli

I love the mid-80's Bayliners...... Just please don't wear colored tank tops & linen jackets:cool:! The soundtrack is acceptable in moderation!. Maybe a Capri in my future, after I get this FireFlite out of my system, I'm not sure the wife will put up with any MBS (multi-boat syndrome).

oops & others will keep ya on the straight & narrow getting that hull, deck, & transom put back. Hypothetical repairs too. Don't let his newly acquired moderator status fool ya. oops was were you & I are now, 3 years ago. Never fixed a boat, & now operates a boat repair business. He's got good stuff all over his hull stretch thread, plus a handy index at the front. Look for WOG's thread on upholstery. His & ezmobee's resto thread are a good read & informative too.

It's winter, maybe keep an eye out for a donor hull for a 4.3L V6, PMC just got over his transom phobia & installed a new transom in preparation of a re-power w/ a Mercruiser set-up. Jasoutside swung his re-power 4.3L into place this morning. PMC, GT1M & I hang out there, give him carp & have a good cup of coffee........ But tread lightly over at Jas's place, he'll try & convert ya to the SC Tinny team:facepalm:! TONS of good stuff in lots of places. Poke around, have fun, be safe, & welcome to the itchy & scratchy 'dark' side of boating.....

As long as you continue to make progress you will not be abandoned, but long periods of inactivity causes the MOB to start looking in your direction...

However, since you brew your own beer, the MOB can be placated by voluminous offerings of same...:D

Thirsty racoons are forming a new gaze & looking for a 15 passenger van & a driver headed towards Normal.!?!?!?

Love those ^^^ raucous guys GT1M. We need to have that crew crash Jas & Son's Boat Wrecking yard. ( I won't forget my fallen brother). But just once, my liver can't take a permanent visit from that bunch.

MrShake: please ignore most of the above, my inner raccoon shouldn't get unrestricted access to the internet after dinner. Try WOG's baby powder trick: a good liberal dusting on exposed skin PRIOR to grinding, and after shower to reduce itching & scratching. I haven't had any trouble using liquid hand soap on exposed skin. I just rub it in until basically dry on any skin. Seems to take care of about 99%. Glassing another project over the summer, I had a big problem with itching. Compared to now its 1000% better.

By the way, found this elsewhere tonight: Home brew

Well, I'll put out my MOB detectors in the yard and prepare the "voluminous offerings" for them.

I'm actually brewing 10 gallons of Hefeweizen saturday, is that voluminous enough?
And, if anyone actually WANTS to, all are welcome to drop by and help with the brew, and help with the drinking.

Interesting that you pointed out that electric brewery....

Nice looking setup.

It looks like this rig means you'll have no problem making a cradle for your hull during dry dock. And supporting the cap when it comes off.....

This is probably too small scale for you: http://www.i-byob.com/...

But it makes these guys:
angry-mob-vector.jpga little bit easier to put up with!

HAHAH, yea, thats a small scale for me.

We will see about cradles and cap supports. I hope to avoid it all. Probably wishful thinking!
