Re: Project "MyLiner" / Deck, stringer, upholstery replacement, maybe more on a Bayli

Ok, So am I at the point where I have to make a decision... I think.

Being as how the motor/outdrive appears to be in perfect shape... my ideal situation would be to not touch them.

The question is... how realistic is it to think I can do a stringer/redeck with the engine still in the boat?

Or even better, is it even remotely possible that the stringers/engine mounts are fine to the rear of the boat and I could leave the doghouse/rear seats intact?

Lets say that was my goal... how would I go about testing the stingers/mounts without cutting out the doghouse/seats?

Is this all a pipe dream and should I start planning on how to get that motor out of there?

It's probably unrealistic to assume that there isn't at least a little rot in the mounts and/or transom. As you know, once it starts, it will spread. I think pulling the motor, like popping the cap, is initially a pain but pays off in make the hull much easier to work on.

+1 ^^^^^^ If you have stringer issues, chances are the motor mounts may have issues, and possible transom. Engine and drive removal should be straight forward...

Welcome brutha!

This will be a cool project, love the videos, and I'm looking forward to your progress...

while the above posts are correct....
lets not get ahead of ourselves.

get your deck up and the wet foam out.

from there we can further tell the shape of things.
the stringers are glass.....so chances are they will be fine....the foam shape in them might be wet....but that does not hurt the integrity of the glass. so its the transom we really have to worry about.

the transom can be investigated by drilling some core samples.

your transom is a small area around the drive......take a drill bit, and place tape around it one inch from the tip......this is a depth guide.....drill into the transom...right up to the tape and pull the drill bit out.......

look at the shavings.....that will tell you if its dry or if its rot.

from there we can decide if the motor has to come out.

even if the motor does have to come out.....it is very easy and only takes a few minits.

Getting ahead of ourselves is what we do here. Let's try to get with the program Ward. :p

So your saying the stringers in this bayliner are not wood?

Not yet, haven't even really started thinking about the upholstery yet. SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) will be heading up that project.

There is some great info here.. check out woodonglass' upholstery instructions... mjdflores did some nice work too and 109JB (who's method I will be using since it requires little-no sewing :D)

Ok, I've got an update coming including pics and a video, but while they are uploading, quick question or two....

Let's say... Just hypothetically... Someone went too deep with their circular saw and cut THROUGH the hull for a ways.... How would it be fixed and do I need to worrys about support?
As well... Lets sat this same hypothetical saw cut the gas tank as well.. Repair?

Details coming soon

Hey dude,

The pro's will tell you exactly how, but no worries about the hull repair. This happens all the time.... If the tank is metal it can be repaired, but you may need a new tank if it's not...

Happy New Year!

Looking forward to the videos!

Hypothetical

circular saw=more work=more money=more worry=new gas tank.

Happy New Year

Hey shake, I also had one of those hypothetical cuts in my hull... Check out my thread where oops and others gave me advice on fixing it...hypothetically, of course... It can be fixed better than new. On the tank, I'll have to defer to the more experienced guys...

Good luck with your build.

Re: Project "MyLiner" / Deck, stringer, upholstery replacement, maybe more on a Bayli

Ok, so here is the actual update

So, as you can see, not so hypothetical.

The seat boxes came out fine. The passenger side was bone dry though.

I did, as you can see, cut through the hull and into the fuel tank. How I didn't blow myself up, I don't know.

The stringers look ok, but core samples haven't been done yet.

Questions remain, how to repair the hull cuts and fuel tank. I assume jb weld is not adequate as a perm repair.

I'll do pics in subsequent posts. I still need to take detailed pics of the hull cuts.
