Thanks GM. The thing I don't like about powder coating is that I can't clean up welds and joints with Bondo. I was going to put an automotive paint on it, but I think I have talked myself into putting Zinsser 123 acrylic primer on it, then top coating with a good latex. I did that on some steel columns at the lake about 10 years ago and they still look good. I really don't want a high gloss finish anyhow, something like an egg shell to complement the other materials.

I just used one drill bit, I set up a jig on my drill press and put it on the lowest speed. I used 30 weight oil to lubricate and cool it. It was still cutting fine on the last hole. I did have a big pile of shavings. The bit was a brad point dewalt "cobalt".

Okay, doing all those holes with one bit is also impressive indeed. They is not an easy thing to do, I know... Are you planning to brush the primer or spray. Reason I ask is because I just started using a new (to me) PPG JP 202 primer that is amazing. It is a catalyzed primer and sand-able and covers nicely as well. And is a 2k type primer that seems to work very nice. I used other primers (Automotive PPG types) that worked well also. Even a nice epoxy primer that seals as well. But you seem to have your recipe for doing them down pretty well. So why reinvent the wheel. Keep those pictures coming. I like them! :thumb:

Thanks GM. I figure if I don't like the paint, I'll have it soda blasted and dry something else. The good thing about the latex is that it hides a lot of blemishes. I will spray it with my airless, which should make quick work of it and the two gates I built for my Dad. Off to brush hog the pasture for the last time this year, hope everyone had a great Halloween!

No boat work but I did make a dent in the gate today. I took off at noon yesterday, went out to the lake and hung out for the evening. I did a few chores this morning and winterized things. I got back this afternoon and knocked out the sheet metal work on the gate. Now its down to grinding and sanding....then some paint. I am ready for this project to be crossed off my list!

Thanks Cor, I have one more thing on my list before I get back to the boat. I need to get the hangar ready for the lay in ceiling. I'm hoping to get that mostly done over Thanksgivings weekend. After that its back to Fuggly! GM, I think it comes from years of working in different trades and just tinkering.

Ha Art, there is nothing wrong with that. I am in the same boat. I had to do everything for myself when we first got married. Because we simply couldn't afford to hire anybody to do it for us. So "need" is the mother of knowledge and invention. When you have to fix things, you will learn how or do without!

I think you should place that gate at the goalline tonight so Baylor can't score! What do y'all say? Boomer Sooner? Something like that.

Like my son said, you don't have to be a great welder, but you have to be a great grinder. He is certified welder and I just took his welding books and read enough and actually welded things until I taught myself what was good and what wasn't. While I also do a lot of soldering (use to be NASA micro-miniature certified), I have to admit, I like welding better!

Art, you do great work. I tip my hat to you sir! :thumb:
