I was recently towing my boat when the spring leaf broke kept. I was towed and turned it in to my insurance but now they refuse to cover it saying that it's typical wear and tear. Any advice ?

What did you turn in? The tow bill or the leaf spring repair?

Welcome to iboats.

Depends on the policy. Some policies are not going to cover mechanical breakdown and the towing portion could depend on the reason too.

Really, until you get the specifics of the policy we are all just guessing. If I trashed a spring on my trailer....... it is wear and tear w/o coverage but if someone hits me and I need to be towed and the spring breaks it will all be covered (That's my policy)

Order new springs. Might want to order both sides, the other side may be ready break as well.

On the other hand, I know some people that may help you with Progressive.

Welcome aboard. Not sure what advice we can give you other than replace the leaf springs. I wouldn't get too worked up about it as that shouldn't be a very expensive job. That's interesting about the tow though. I had to have my rig put on a rollback a little over a year ago because the brakes locked up on one side; clearly a wear item. I just called my insurance company and had them send the tow. They never even asked what was wrong with it.

Now you know how they save you hundreds of bux. They don't pay any.

Would you expect them to pay for the same items if it happened to your car? Don't think so unless the damage was the result of an accident.

I have had insurance with multiple companies over the years, never made a claim. I recently did an audit of sorts with all of our insurance... Home, auto, boat, life etc.
On the boat I went with a policy that is a rider on our homeowners to cover the boat. The oddest thing was how little it cost to lower the deductibles ... 1000-500-250-100-0. It was only 12.00 per year for each step. It also has an emergency assistance/repair portion that covers you on the water. No limits, the only requirement is that the repair person be a licensed pro. We were also able to customize contents and accessory limits... stereo, bimini, skis, fishing gear etc. It was cheaper than my old stand alone insurance and covered much more.

Not sure how many policies would cover this type of damage. Typically you'd be covered for liability- damage you cause to other people or their property. Collision- Damage from a crash when someone else is not liable. Comprehensive- Storm damage, vandalism, theft, etc...
Maybe some medical expense coverage.
Nothing in the above would cover a broken leaf spring or any mechanical damage that was not the result of a storm, a crash, or some other insured event.
Varies a lot by state, and the coverage offered in your policy.

By the way, I've had several claims with Progressive (not boat but Auto), and they've been very fair and easy to work with.

Agreed... had the O/P had an accident as a result of the broken spring, it would be covered.

My coverage does however include "mechanical repairs on the water". My agent read the paragraph to me over the phone it was worded very simple, something like emergency repairs or assistance needed to get you back to a safe location.... We laughed, and i said so they will replace my engine at the dock? He said well it doesn't have any stipulations other than the help must come from a professional. It cost next to nothing so I'm not too worried. I figured i would get it, if we were out of the area and needed a tow or something. It specifically said it paid for towing service and gas etc. Locally, i know enough folks its not an issue.

They pay lots of claims every day. COVERED causes of loss claims, to be exact. Your inclusion of the word "any" is a false statement.

As a couple fellas have already pointed out,

Mechanical damage alone is almost NEVER covered by any insurance policy. When your transmission goes out in your car, do you think State Farm pays for it? Heck no. It's excluded in every auto/boat/home/commercial policy I have ever read. It's even excluded in Yacht Policies.

Now if the broken spring had resulted in a collision that damaged the boat, the collision damage would be covered.

As far as the towing bill, do you have towing coverage on your policy?

As usual, the answer to all this is to read your policy and understand it. If you can't understand what's covered (this does get confusing, I know) have someone explain it to you.

I could see them not covering the break of the spring, but do not see why they would not cover the cost of the tow, unless towing is excluded from your policy.

Towing is "usually" something extra that you have to pay for on a separate line. Not always, but usually. SO if you don'[t ask for it at the time to purchase the policy, you may not get it.

I just checked my State Farm policy. It covers up to $500. for towing of the boat or trailer.

My take: IF you had towing coverage Prog is responsible for the tow bill. The broken spring is wear and tear so you are responsible for the spring repair,,,,, unless the spring broke because of an accident (unlikely).

Agreed. I'm still not entirely clear on what anna was seeking reimbursement for. Oh bother.

I learned a few years back that AAA will not cover towing a boat trailer in Michigan, but they will if I broke down in Minn. or Wis.???

I have my insurance through USAA, and when we talked to them, apparently you can pick up "scuttle coverage" to cover costs if the boat is not salvageable and they have to scuttle it? I figured since she's fiberglass, i could forego that and use a shotgun through the hull

JB tried and did, but the truth is, you have to know your policy and what's covered and what isn't. Progressive hasn't done anything wrong, as far as we know, with the "facts" we've been given.
