Hey guys,
I posted this in the Volvo forum but not getting much of any response. I've determined that my rusty pulleys on my 4.3l volvo are resulting in excessive belt wear and excessive dust in the engine compartment which will ultimately result in me having to rebuild the carb. So I'm addressing the pulleys.

I've sanded most of the heavy rust off and want to know if using the POR 15 product would be an issue on something like a pulley? I'm pretty sure its fine but don't want to do it and end up screwing myself in anyway with the operation of the pulleys and the belts, etc. My plan is to use the degreaser, metal prep, then 2 coats of the POR 15, then top coat with rustoleum enamel.

Opinions?

Just so you know, the dust is no reason you need to rebuild your carbs. The dust just sits on the outside of the carb or in the throat area. It really does nothing to the functionality of the carb at all.

I used to be a big fan of POR 15, and in the past I would emphatically say yes. however with recent POR 15 experiences, I can not personally recommend them any more.

however your approach is close to what I would do, except I would bead blast the pulleys to remove any and all scale prior to painting. I would also use a preval sprayer to get even coats on the pulleys

Thanks for the responses guys. Bruce, I'm in agreement... I took the boat out last weekend and she ran fine so I'm not going to touch the carb yet. Will wait until the end of the season to mess with it since its one of the remaining areas that I haven't refurbished on this motor. Just got concerned cause a few times I experienced some bogging and thats when I checked and found the flame arrestor completely clogged up with belt dust.... Took the flame arrestor off and had a bunch of crap all over the choke plate. Cleaned it out best I could and it seems fine for now.

Just want to address the pulleys for now.

Scott, I'm not removing them for the cleaning, prep and paint and the room is a bit tight so I'm going to do this with brushes so as to not get paint all over other parts of the motor. Really I want to get this done as quickly as possible cause the kids and wifey are chompin at the bit to get back out on the water...
Thanks again

Scott, care to share your experience? I worked with POR15 recently and I think it is superior product in many different aspect (with few minor exceptions specifically regarding the writing of instruction sheets) I am very curious to know why you are no longer feeling comfortable recommending it.

To the original poster, I assume by POR15 you are referring to the rust preventive product; in such case, I can't think if any reason it wouldn't work or cause any problems.

about 3 or 4 years ago, restomotive technologies (original POR15 company) was purchased and became part of Absolute Coatings. since then, the POR15 has not been the same. I have had it peel off in sheets from my outdrive and trailer, and I have had components start to rust thru the POR 15 applied to the reciever hitch on my truck which was also coated with 3 coats of chassis black for UV protection, as well as rust thru the A-arms on my daily driver.

I had sand blasted the outdrive castings to give the surface some tooth. used the metal prep, and the POR 15 simply failed to adhere. It was thinned per recommendation for spraying with POR 15 thinner. then again, the stuff I brushed on without thinning also peeled. I offered to send both the paint back, as well as to send back the peelings and one of my outdrive components for lab testing. The correspondence from their customer service abruptly stopped at that point.

As I stated, I used to recommend it higly, and buy the stuff by the case. I used it on every hot rod build or restoration I have ever done since 1993. however after literally having both the POR 15 fail to adhere, the hardnose paint fail, and the rust thru issues, I have given up on POR 15.

Hey guys, thanks for the advise and info above as always. So I finished up with the pulley's yesterday and I think they came out well. I used the POR 15 and top coated with rustoleum enamel flat black. Looks good, hope it lasts. We shall see.....
