Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I now have 6" between the bottom of the skeg and the ground at full down trim.

Going in the backyard, FINALLY.

Here is a picture of one of the new front bunks that I am going to add. In total I will have 6 bunks. I am sick of inadequate support from the trailer and I want to be able to coast the boat on without worries of hitting the keel on the trailer.

Thanks! I finished all but one bunk, the rear outer starboard :( The side boards still need to be welded on, the one on port is just setting on the posts. After that wiring and new rubber roller and I am done! Oh, I might have to extend the tongue in order to get the boat in the water without sinking my Infiniti.

Put some lights on this trailer and it is done for now. I still need to sandblast it and put some good paint on it, but this can wait until end of season since I would also like to throw some brakes on it. I think I will dunk it Thursday or Friday night.

You can really see the keel damage caused by the previous bow hook and from misses when loading the boat.

This weekend is big party time on the lake.

Don't worry, starting mid October I will have tons of questions about glass, paint, and wood work and my boat will look just like yours.

Another great weekend on the boat. I had some trailer issues today, all my fault, and have already pulled dissasembled the carb. My friends and I are finally getting wakeboarding down and trying to teach some others. I love my boat :) Carb pictures soon. Those with a Rochester 2bbl will enjoy.

Looks like I have to find a new lower carb body. The accelerator pump inlet check ball is jammed in the accelerator pump cylinder inlet tube :(

that sucks! But hey, now you can fuel inject it so when its full stuff on a 60 degree incline up and obstacle it wont bog on you anymore:D Might want to throw a locker in there too!

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

It is raining like crazy here in North Texas this weekend. This was one of the first weekends I haven't been on the boat since repairing the headgasket issue :) AND I finaly have the carb rebuilt and ready to go!!! I am dying to see how the carb works now that the acclerator pump is working and the float is not set too high.

Here are some carb rebuild pictures.

Wrong size ball in the accel pump inlet and it is jammed.

Having a working accelerator pump rawks! The boat drove much better today EXCEPT...the rubber boot from the exhaust riser to the outdrive exhaust tube had a large hole in it filling the engine compartment with exhaust gas and dumping water in the bilge. The boat would hardly idle unless the engine cover was open or the wind focused into the air intakes. Time to order a new riser gasket and exhaust hose.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

hey System-F, been following your thread here. i just became a boat owner a week ago and i have a ton to learn about them. sounds like you're doing the things i'm planning to do to mine. it's and old fixer-upper that seems to run and float alright, but needs some cosmetic work. i'm curious as to how you plan to paint your boat amongst other things. i too am an avid wheeler, but i thought i would give this boat thing a chance. anyway, sorry for the long post. i just wanted to say good job and i'm following along.

NO such thing as a long post :) I have been reading as many restore posts as possible including thebigsailboatproject (google it) and am fairly certain I am going to use Interlux Brightside as my final coat after much hull and cap prep. We have been discussing my interior at the weekly tie up and this weekend someone came up with some very great idea that I will share once I have figured out where everything is going.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

This weekend's highlights:

The carb rebuild works great as long as the engine compartment isnt' flooded with exhaust gas. It sucks when you have a large hole in your exhaust belows (inside the engine compartment from the risere) because it fills up your bilge with water and engine compartment with exhaust gas. The boat tops out somewhere over 45 @ 3900 rpm, but who cares...I want to ski. The space shuttle flew overhead today as it was landing at Carswell Joint Reserve base.

I guess it was time for the inside exhaust bellows to go. I had to apply a duct tape repair in order to prevent the bilge from filling up on the way back. The bilge pump could handle the flow, I was just being extra precautious.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I installed the new inside exhaust bellows (referred to by my friends as the exhaust condom) last night and cleaned up the gasket surfaces. I also found that one of the guys who goes to our tie-up owns a boat shop and can get me any merc. or sierra parts I need for a good price...though there are still things I prefer to order from iboats :) Another cool thing about the boat guy is that he lets us try out props. I took home a 22 pitch Merc High 5 propeller, but it did not fit correctly :( The splines fit, but the barrel of the propeller is a smaller diameter than my gear case and the hub was too long as not enough splines were exposed. I think this prop came off an outboard as I know my old drive can take any prop from an Alpha (gen 1 or 2) or Bravo one.

One last note which might sound kind of strange but actually is an important step in this build. Yesterday I had my cable TV turned off, gone, bye bye, no more HBO. I still kept my internet service as it is worth the money 10x over just for information not to mention I need it for work, but no more extras. The main reason for doing this was because of my boat build and other hobbies. The money I will save from getting rid of the TV will pay for my resin and maybe more and if I have time to watch TV then I should be working on the boat, riding my bike, playing with the dog, or sleeping :)

We have about 3 more weekends left in the season and on the weekdays I need to start spending my time reinforcing the garage to handle the engine weight, cleaning out the shop to house the boat mechanicals and building a dolly so the boat can be pushed in and out of the garage.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

Not much to report. I ran a 19 pitch prop this weekend and was WAY under propped. I have a 21 4-blade stainless on order (thanks Dad). The only problem the boat has been having is hard starting after it has been running and then sits. It acts like a vapor lock situation and the fuel line from the pump is very hot. I am going to re-route the line and insulate it to see if that helps. This weekend I am towing the boat 200miles to hit a supposed good ski lake.

This weekend's pictures:

That date on the title should be 9-26_27-09.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

Just got back from lake Austin this weekend and I must say that is the perfect ski lake assuming not too much traffic. My new stainless slips like crazy and I am going to try to swap it for something else :( I bought the lumber to start reinforcing my garage so I can pull the motor/lift the hull and flip it this winter. I have to figure out the prop situation before I can start working on the boat, though.

This weekends alubm:

I have to say....... you are a man with a heart or gold...

not once have you been whiney or bummed too much to NOT continue on with all of the obstacles you have encountered with this little Glastron......Hats off to you:)
also that is a real cool looking glastron......nice boat!

What I see here is a good person / family, got the short end of the stick... on a cool looking boat, by someone who probably knew about the serious issues...and took advantage of the good people......BAD Previous Owner BAD! shame on you! a buyer who's excited about the purchase, misses a few checks and is taken advantage of.

Boy.... I lived down in TX for 2 years in the 80's (Ft Hood, TX) and I never realized how much opportunity there is, down there, for aluminum and steel to deteriorate....man that prop was even jammed on...the trailer looked as if it was stripped by BIX.....the exhaust studs looked corroded....

LET THAT BE A LESSON TO ALL.....they say to LUBE the prop shaft before install of a prop with waterproof grease AND FOR GOOD REASON as seen in this thread!. also....maybye it's a good idea to use some thin oil when assembling parts, on all of the threads of parts....so they dont deteriorate so quickly...adds some protection

Also as a lesson - CHECK THE DIPSTICK / OIL and run that puppy up in a big bucket of water or at least on the water ears when purchasing a boat.....

GREAT close up pics System and very thorough thread details...YOU DA MAN!

How is the JB weld holding up on the block System F? My father-in-law used to be a trucker, and with practically everything he did, he incorporated JB weld into a repair LOL he swears by the stuff!

PS you have a NEW boat practically.....now next season you can ENJOY it with worrying about mechanical failures...Have Fun next season!
