Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

LOL, that is great.....looks like its about to sink however!

Thanks for tuning in B.haley, do you have a thread started?

That is an interesting thought bob.....but I was thinking the twin 115 mercs would be cool! I don't think I'm going to get too carried away with the power on this one.....

Should have some updates tonight or tomorrow, I have been toying with some ideas.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

Thanks flores, but speed really isn't the focus of this build....but its always a nice thing!

I set down tonight and made a list of what I want this boat to be. More or less after looking at the list it is a boat that I can take on a cruise (15 mph or so) or an anchored party platform.

With all that in mind I kind of threw out a lot of what I have been thinking about and seen in the new pontoons. I have a sketch of what I'm thinking about.....naturally I can't get the scanner to work! I'll run to the office in the morning and scan it. I think I'm on the right track now....but who knows I may hate it in the morning!

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

Here is a quick line drawing of the idea I had last night.....off to the shop to get some work done!

floorplan11-18-11.jpg

I think the helm needs to move relative to the ships ladder. Also I'm a little concerned about having the deck / seating so far forward from a weight distribution standpoint. Well its a starting point, we'll see where it goes from here.

By the way can we post PDF files on here now?

I don't see an ice chest in the plan. Did you forget to look at your list?

Thanks for the thoughts.....trust me we WON'T forget the ice chest! Here are a couple of shots of the gunnel mock-ups I have so far. I also have video 1, working on getting video 2 edited.

The taller mock-up is my 1st try. I didn't like how "tall" it looks. Its actually 6" shorter than the old fence when you measure it from the deck.

The second one is shorter, but I don't like how it doesn't cover the pontoon framing members.

Ok here is video 2.....more on the design and where we are today.

Heading back out to the shop.....hopefully I can make some headway on the mockup. I spent this morning trying to remember how to post to you tube and picking up supplies!

The second gunnel is my choice too.

Love the idea of rounding the front end off!

The only negative aspect in regards to moving things forward, aside of the weight you mentioned, is field of view. Maybe not a big deal sitting in the shop but with 8 on board it may be an issue.

Great build, you've obviously dedicated copious amounts of time into planning and dreaming! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

the plan looks good arch.....

the only concern i have is on the 24 inch gunwhales......it seems to me like the perfect height to hit the back of your knees and man overboard....

it will be fine with the seating but aft of that....

thoughts?

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

Thanks Half...I spend my day "planning", so sometimes I jump off too soon on mine....hopefully I will stick with things till they mature. I find that if I don't I end up standing around staying things like "Hmmmm that didn't like up like I thought", or "I'm better burn this before anyone else sees it...." :D

Glad you liked my fence solution Oops! I'm with you on the aft deck and rail height. I have toyed with the idea of some kind of cable rail solution. We have a cable rail for a house stair rail in fabrication right now, if that turns out the way I think...I may integrate it into this design. I'm also pretty good about making sure everyone is on their butt when we are moving, one of my pet peeves. Today is Dad's b-day so time to hang out with him for a while!

I like the fence scrapping solution...LOL.

I see in your future a pontoon with James Bond-like features, all of them retracting stealthily into something like this...

Best regards,
GT1M

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

Is there any weight/cost savings to using the existing fence as an undercarriage/frame for your new gunnel? Welding isn't one of my talents, and welding aluminum isn't supposed to be easy, but doing things the easy way isn't why iboaters rebuild & restore the classics. Or why the tinny & reevits boys do what they do either......:) They just do it with less irritation, fewer rashes and with less itching & scratching. Of course I seem to remember aluminum exposure causes Alzheimer's. They quit making uncoated/treated aluminum cookware because of it or Parkinson's, I can remember. I'd prefer neither, thank you very much.

Tinners: Insert your favorite lung transplant joke here.....

Add CRS & MBS to my list of maladies, the wife is going to be thrilled!!?? CRS: C (can't) R (remember) S (sh*t). MBS: you all know & have accepted as your fate. Plus 'solving the fence problem' was probably very cathartic & totally worth it to have oops spit coffee on his keyboard & monitor:D. Anyway, at the very least, recycling the fence should at least buy a case of your favorite frosty adult beverage!
Sorry about the above, once I started it was hard to stop....

And now back to your program:

Between the back of the front lounge seating & the front of the bow is that a broad bow brow (??). Not sure of exact term but:
houseboat1.jpg
And probably done in a smooth elliptical curve rather then anything this angular.... Are soft curves the new angular or are hard angles the new curve???? Although an angular bow may help you evade enemy radar, allowing more stealthy approaches & departures....

Without details about the roof deck shown only as 'above' the main deck, I can only guess with the stairs going up, that it will be a 2nd level for the aircraft carrier (or a heli-pad?) for use as a deck rather then 'just' a roof to cover the main deck. Have you considered a fly-bridge captain's helm? Remote throttle & steering lead me to reference a comment someone else made about an I/O conversion w/ small 4cyl since you don't want or need a blown bb 454:eek: Tim Allen will be very disappointed that you so casually dismissed MORE POWER. With at least some space below deck & above the water, dropping the motor somewhat below the deck, means a lower engine cover, which gives you a flat surface to mount a removable grill, & frees up some deck space in your rendering for the keg-o-rater fridge between the grill & bar, that puts the swim platform/ladder where you have the grill located now. Easy closer access bar to grill, with prep/staging space for the grillmaster on the bar. And I thought that remote steering & throttle would be 'easier' to run via servo/hydrolics on an I/O, rather then an OB...

Lastly, with concerns about a forward weight bias, what about extending the upper deck further towards the stern, making it overall, a longer deck. That of course supposes that you have the upper decks rear edge above the helm seat, as shown by the dashed outline. The I/O might help shift the CG rearwards as well. Extending the upper deck & converting to an I/O doesn't improve your center of buoyancy though....

Just my $0.015 (I don't think my opinion is yet worth the whole 2 cents.......)

Looking forward to more updates as your plan comes together. Greatly enjoyed your Miss Morgan build. Thanks

EDIT: I couldn't get the videos to load until after I posted, re: CRS above.... I'll leave my post as typed, but it appears that you've answered a couple of my questions already. And an I/O won't really sit much lower, if at all....But it's all about throwing ideas around.....

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I like the way you think GT1M! I'll keep the stealth features in mind.

jbdurt00. I think we will end up with more angular than curved do to trying to keep the molds simple. Yes the area in front of the seating group is a sloped bow. I do need to think through how I'm going to get off the front of the boat....but 99 of the time I use it we will be going out to the beach, so getting on of the stern shouldn't be an issue. I can really see her backed up to the beach most of the time anyhow....easy access to the grill and beer from the beech. Yes it has an upper deck. I like the idea of the fly bridge, but height is an issue with my dock. Right now I think what I have in mind will squeak under the dock. I also want to be able to remove the top for storage and travel (yes I like making things complicated). I hear you on the IO, but I'm concerned about the weight....seems like all the IO's I have seen have the 3rd toon. I did toy with the idea of the twin 115s, what would sound better than twin towers? But this is more the floating bar than speed demon! I'm going to work on the mock-up more today, I should have an update later.

Hey Arch, looking good.

Been working on the transom and new motor mounts for the mercruiser. Question? What type of ply is on your deck? Looks like a panel with Lowe's markings.

Its acuply from Lowes, didn't feel like shelling out the bucks for marine for this project.

marine ply would give you no benefit in this application. totally unnecessary
