OK,

I just read all thru the thread and after I saw that you have normal compression on all cyls, did you pressure check the cooling system?

You'll need to isolate your exhaust manifolds first.

There is instructions on how to pressure check the block, heads and intake manifold.

You should do that before you pull heads.

well if you dont see anything on the plugs and nothing coming out of the holes (sludgey muck ) for example.

then Bubba musta hit it right on the head , pull heads-carefully and look over the gaskets . Maybe its a bad head and maybe less, wont know till you yank em off of there...

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

I think Bubba is on something here. If the water was getting into the oil from the exhaust manifolds, there would be BIGGER problems (ex. hydroocked, no compression on one cylinder or more, etc.).

Its obvious there is a problem with the cooling system. Bubba has it right, pull the heads and inspect. Better yet post pictures of the head block mating surfaces. While your at it, post pics of the intake/head/block mating surfaces too.

Good luck.

P.S. I'm no expert. Just my opinion

Ok. I checked the plugs and they looked pretty. Pretty bad that is. The just looked old and need replacing. But, they didn't have any sludge or oil on them.

I'm not sure how to check the cooling system pressure because I have a raw water cool down system. I'm also unsure how to check the block or heads without removing the heads.

I'm having a friend come over on weds to help remove the heads. Does anyone have any last min advise before pulling the heads off on weds? Thanks

Ayuh,... Isolate the blocks cooling passages bycrimping hoses, adding plugs, whatever it takes,..
Then add Air, about 10psi...
When you Hear it leakin', follow the sound to the Crack...

I'd pull the motor, rather than just the head after, it's gotta come Out anyways...

Agreed. You could pull the intake manifold (before you pull the engine) if you hear the hissing.......so you can see exactly where it's leaking......

but if you hear hissing, you're most likely going to pull the engine.

Head gaskets and head cracks are usually on the list......but they're usually lower.

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

Just being contrary, I would not pull the engine. The chances are about 99% the problem is in the heads/gaskets. But, thats just me... ;)

I was thinking compression was going to be low on one cylnder but all 8 had compression between 145-150.

But since the compression check showed "normal" compression, wouldn't cooling system pressure checking come before pulling heads?

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

well finally..... after much hard work.....
I finally found the problem and it was not good news. I have a small crack in the block. I almost have the engine completely apart and it is ready for removal.

Next problem. Does anyone know of a place to buy a used short block. everything else on the engine looks good and can be re-used (pumps, pan, heads....). I was looking at the prices of new mercruiser blocks and it looks like I will be fishing from the pier this year. You know it is bad when you are praying for a blown head gasket and become dissapointed when thats not the problem.

Thank you guys for all the input and advice.

Fishinpa.....
Great site. Thanks. But I have one concern. The site only has 305 engines for years 1987-1996. By factory engine is a 2003. Would the older style motor work with my current parts (heads, pans, pumps)????

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

Ayuh,... I'd drop in a 350,... It'll bolt right up with your parts...

Free horsepower...

You need a motor from 1987 to date...If you use your heads...
1996 or newer if buying a Long block..

Agree, drop in a 350ci from Rapidomarine.com Very well known company. Add the Oil drain kit since it will be out. Let us know how it goes.

How about a picture of the crack.

You'd have to look around. I don't know what your block casting # is, but I have a Vortec 305 block (and about 7 other blocks) in the garage that I kept in anticipation of demand from locals who didn't winterize until Christmas.

Keep in mind though that it will, in many cases, cost more than just getting a long from Rapido. You'd have to sit down and figure out exactly what machine shop work you'd want to have done, exactly what parts you want to reuse, etc. Then there's the issue of warranty. With their prices, and their warranty, you might be money ahead getting a long from them and trying to part out the the leftovers.

If you do convert to 350 (free horsepower, but some people for whatever reason like to keep things "stock") just keep track of what you put in; for your sake and the next guy's. Makes it easier to look up parts, at least it did for me since the local dealers typically ask for serial #.

Good luck.

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

Thanks guys for the help over the past year. I took the advice and bought a 350 vortec from Rapido marine. Great price I may add 1830.00 delivered. I installed the motor myself (really not knowing what I was doing). Believe it or not, it actually started on the first crank. I nearly had a heart attack when I heard it start. I was certain that I installed something backwards and upside down. But everything fell into place.

But alas, I encountered one little problem at the end. The timing is a tad off. I broke out my mid 1980's timing light and noticed only one mark on the engine block. And one mark on the balancer. I asked around and someone told me I had to use a timing light with a forward advanced feature. What do I set the forward advance to. I am going to buy a new timing light this weekend and I am donating my old timing light to the smithsonian in D.C..

P.s. Should I have started a new thread?

Thanks again. Looks like I will have it done just in time to winterize it.

2003 chaparral 210 with a mercruiser 5.0 and alpha 1 outdrive.

Ayuh,... I'd look up the timing stated for a 350 of the exact vintage of the 305 you're replacing....

Re: Pls help! Water and oil everywhere.

Go on Amazon and do a search for "advance timing light". They will have a few.
