There was a family that had a pit bull. The dog started bitting a one and a half year old boy.

When the mother of the child called 911 to get help, the dispatcher asked what kind of dog was it. She responed by saying it was a pit. Then the dispatch said "Stupid People". Later the 911 dispatcher has been put on suspension for the statement.

I'm sorry, but the dispatcher is right. Anybody in the USA that has pets, read the news, or even had converstations about this kind of dog knows that a pit bulls bite is worse than most dogs.

The dog may have been okay for a long time and been a peaceful animal, but it only takes one time for them to clamp down on someone to do damage.

What I know about them is enough for me not to own one. I never want to take a chance on rather or not it is going to attack and make me liable with a possible prison sentence.

I agree with the dispatcher, "STUPID PEOPLE"

Ya'll know what I think of Pit Bulls, considering one bit the heck out of my little dog.

But in all honesty, the 911 dispacher shouldnt have said this on the phone. Not very helpful to the situation.

Ken

True Ken, but I don't think the man should lose his job over it.

To me the woman should be sited for child endangering.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

Perhaps not. But anyone who leaves an animal around someone who cannot defend themselves (child, handicapped, another animal, or anyone just plain incapable of self-defense in the event of an attack) is stupid...If not, deranged, inconsiderate, sadistic, or just plain ignorant.

That would include me on three seperate occasions, and my wife last night.
Without getting wordy like I normally do, I take blame for letting an animal dang nigh kill two of my own children, and letting another dog attack my own dog.
Last night, my wife left the window down on the car...My min pin, Bambi lept-out (the first time in her life she did this). Carol's sister's german sheppard saw Bambi, and tore her a new hole. 200 buk vet bill, and she was given 50/50 chance of survival.
It's called responsibility-vs-irresponsibility.

Ah Man! 12Footer I feel for ya. I know you care alot about Bambi. I remember you posting her pic one time. Very cute dog. Sure hope she pulls through. Your a strong man and I know you will do your part to help her make it. I can imagine how your wife feels also.

One should realize, having a pet is just about like having a child. They have to be watched and you must know what their capable of.

12footer
dont beat on yerself to hard. its only money. most people tend to forget pets are stillinstinct driven animals. I have delt with animalpysche most my life and still dont know why they do some of the things they do.
I had a friend of mine his 10 year old lab bit his baby. but later they found the lab was going blind and apperently snapped cause it felt threatened. I know it wasa good dog cause I took care of it for the next 4 years until it died.
wasnt the dogs fault nor the babies(toddler) nor the parents. it just happens sometimes.
I haveseveral cats that I have trained to bring rubber balls backandto do other "tricks" its not hardya just have tounderstand some of how they live. I also have a 10 year old cat that has been deaf for about the last 5 years. cant hear anything but visual clues willsethim off like a roman candale, 10 years old 18 pounds and gets along quietly butif he percieves a threat he attacks.
so dont beat on yerself. happens.
hope all is well.
nothing can beat the love of a pet :) :)

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

12'er, sorry to hear about your dog.

Getting to the original thread topic, the people might have been "Stupid People", but the dispatcher was wrong for saying it.

If one of my driver's ever say something to that effect in front of one of my customers, he/she would be fired.

That was/is not very professional, IMO.

A 911 dispatcher is there to help us, not call us names, especially where one can hear them.

They were wrong, plain and simple, don't matter what the case, that's something you don't say to the caller.

Sorry to here about your pup 12er,hope she's O.K.
.
I have had 8 pit bulls in my life, none of them ever bit anyone and were all very good dogs.Pit bulls are DOGS,just like any other DOG and the people were stupid to ever have a DOG were it could get a hold of their baby, but the dispatcher shouldn't have said that.

I was bitten after the owner said "he doesn't bite" yeah right!

I'm a dispatcher & what that person said was wrong. You put personal feelings aside & just do your job.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

Phone guys like mailmen deal with people's dogs everyday. After 30 years of listening to stupid people tell me their dog doesn't bite and doesn't need to be put away, I just get in my truck and drive away. They can fix their own phone. The boss will back me up every time. I don't know what it is about a dog bite, but they hurt. As for a pit, there is no way I will be in the same house with one. My neighbor was walking by a pit behind a fence and it wriggled under the fence and grabbed this 12 year old girl by the face and dang near killed her. It was put down. She had 42 stitches in her ear alone sewing it back on her head plus other damage. Yeah the dispatcher was wrong, but has probably heard the same kind of call a number of times. Stupid people.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

Sorry, but if Any dog belonging to Anybody that bites Any kid of mine beyond a nip is going to die one way or another! If the owner won't, if the City won't, I WILL! PERIOD!

This isn't exactly on-topic but I once had a neighbor with a mid-sized mutt that hated everybody but his family. Dog constantly threatened me on my property (no leash). Once I was on my Harley Sprint and he started after me. I stopped, turned the bike to face it and ran it down. Only the front wheel ran it over and didn't seem to hurt it (dang! too bad it wasn't a Real Harley), but it never threatened me on my turf again.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

Sorry to hear about your pup, 12footer. Ain't it amazing how fearless those little ones can be. Had a pair of dachsunds once that would go after any kind of big dog; they were all bark of course & no bite, but this time the shepherd must've perceived a threat. You might feel stupid but you're not - you couldn't have predicted it.

I got a big dog now gentle as the day is long but anybody looks the least bit uneasy around 'im I never just dismiss 'em with a "aw he don't bite." I remove him from the situation.

Maybe that 911 op is just suspended for retraining - or maybe he/she's just not suited for the job. I been known to blurt out inappropriate comments at inopportune times, and something like that could send an overwrought mother into a fit of hysteria.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

I was raised when name calling was condidered harmless. Back then I would rather been called names instead of my backside getting whooped on.

I think this was a case where the woman knew in her mind she was wrong and stupid. Thanks to the dispatchers statement it shifted the attack of her child to him. I still think she should have known about all the controversay on the pits. It is just not their bite, but their ability to lock their jaws and hang on like a snapping turtle.

Re: Pit bull vs 911 dispatch

:) A very , very good friend of mine that I have coffee with most mornings, lost his young lab, 3 weeks ago, it had been shot!!! Even made the evening news on TV!!!! No one should be out killing any pet animal unless there is no other alternative!!!! If they find the person he will be fined heavly!!!!

Two wrongs were commited that day, and one was the owner did not put the dog on a leash, which is mandatory in our city!!! The dog would still be alive today!!! ;)
