I am new to the forum, and no doubt, the questions i pose have been covered many times before. However, in hopes that i could receive help from the board on my problem, i forged ahead. I started my attempt at water pump impeller replacement on my 84+ 30 hp Johnson outboard. No luck removing "gear case". After reviewing tech on this site i determined the problem was hidden beneath the pick up area on the gear case.

Thanks guys!

On to the actual removal and inspection of the internals. The condition of the impeller itself left something to be desired.

The impeller housing was somewhat lacking as well...

My question, if you will allow me, is in two parts:

a) Advice on removal of the shift linkage that extends down from the motor itself to the point at which it terminates into the connection at the gear case.

b) Help in identifying the "bushing" which supports the drive shaft just above the point where it enters the gear case.

Any additional advice is welcomed, and much appreciated.

Re: Part identification

To remove whats left of the water pump you will have to slide up that nut on the end of the shift rod. Looks like you have a bit of corrosion there so you may have to work at it. Under it you will find a plastic sleeve, at least on my 35 hp it's plastic. Carefully remove it. You'll need to reuse it.

That "bushing" is called a spacer in the parts catalog. For a short shaft it's 0326692. For a long shaft it's 0326693.

I have to ask. What the heck happened to cause that much damage?

Re: Part identification

Thanks for the replys. My apologies for the large images. I am not sure about the model number, the motor has been "painted" so the markings are not plainly visible. Where is the model number plate located? As to the damage, it occurred when we were using this motor to move steel roofing to our family duck camp. Apparently, i picked up some hyacinth en route to the camp. Inattention would be a more accurate damage assessment. The worst part of this tale is that hurricane Ike destroyed the duck camp that my grandfather built back in the mid 60's. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Part identification

The plastic parts melted from overheating. The same water that cools the powerhead spills out and cools the pump. Otherwise, hot exhaust blows on it and melts it.

The spacer is there to complete the isolation tube that runs from the pump to the powerhead. Purpose of the isolation tube is to keep exhaust and water away from the upper end of the drive shaft and lower end of the crankshaft, including the crankshaft seal.

Re: Part identification

Unless you have a good memory, I don't. I think it is suppose to go on a certain way so before you remove that plastic sleeve that's under the nut I would take a picture of it so you know which way to install it.

Thanks for the explanation F_R. A lot of engineering goes into these motor that one is not aware of.
