Ok so i have a 1975 Ted Williams outboard and I thought I was changing the oil in it, so when i unscrewed this what I thought was the drain plug nothing came out. I just thought that it had not been changed in a really long time and had just been burned up. So i poured oil into this hole then stood the motor up to see if I had poured enough in well nothing came out of that hole and it all was running down the leg out the exhaust hole and down above the prop. I have pics here to show where the drain plug is and where all it leaked from, if someone could tell me what I did wrong or why this happend I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks, Clay

What were you trying to do? Change gear oil? Lubricate drive shaft?
Can't tell from your pics which hole is which in your description.
The fill plug for your lower unit will be below the propeller shaft; it doesn't look like you were any where near that low.

Re: Not sure why this happened please help!!!!!!

That engine is an air-cooled 2-stroke engine. No oil goes into the crankcase of the engine. Engine oiling is done by mixing oil with the gasoline. Yours uses a 24:1mix.

The plug you removed has nothing to do with oil.

The only oil you put directly into the outboard goes into the gear case near the prop.

An owner's manual for your engine is available from www.searspartsdirect.com. You'll need to enter the outboard's model number at that web site to find the manual for your engine, which will be listed in the Engine assembly list.

Thanks guys yes i was trying to change the gear oil but i guess i had a major brain fart because i knew that the 2 cycle worked that way. i should really pay more attention some times.. anyways it just ran out the exhaust so it will just be blown back into the water... i will have to run it for a little bit in the garbage can again so i dont leak out into the ocean... :)
