I know carpet holds moisture... what other cons are there to having carpet?

How would I go about painting the new floor.. it's just pressure treated wood.

Rustoleum paint?

In what type of boat and how do you plan to use it?

Carpet deadens sound, you'll be surprised how much noise you'll make without it.

If you're painting PT lumber, be sure it is completely dry before painting... this will take a couple of summer months to do, as a matter of fact you want it completely dry if you're going to put carpet down too.

Tape a 4"x4" piece of plastic or aluminum foil to the topside of the plywood (be sure to tape all 4 sides completely) and leave it for a day or two. If there is moisture on the underside of the plastic or foil when you remove it, it isn't dry.

That's a neat trick...never heard that before.

And on the carpet vs paint...personally I like the looks and feel of carpet (and the sound deadening). Never been a big fan of painted floors. Carpet does have some drawbacks, but as long as your wood deck is properly installed and sealed you'll be fine. It's all mostly opinion on that issue so I gave you mine.

I am not a fan of carpet in a boat. It holds water to help speed up the rot process and it also holds a lot of dirt. I bet if you do a search on rotted floors, the common denominator will be because of the carpet. Have you looked into having it gel-coated or maybe get some snap-in carpet that can be removed and dried. Thanks, Steven

Snap in carpet sounds enticing...

Gelcoating is too expense :/ I'm on a VERY tight budget

Check with Jay (friscoboater) on the gel-coat. He is doing it himself with a roll-on gel-coat. Thanks, Steven

I used Rustoleum marine paint with their anti-slip additive. Makes a good traction surface and solves the moisture retention problem of carpet.

I made the floor from 1/4" ext. plywood w/ 2 coats of epoxy resin, followed by Rusto marine primer for wood/fiberglass, then a coat of Rusto Marine topside paint, followed by two more coats of the paint with the non-slip additive.

If you don't mind my asking, what's it usually cost to epoxy a floor? And how do you do it...

I was going to caulk plastic sheeting on top of wood...

Re: Paint VS Carpet for a new floor

I got 1/2 gallon of epoxy resin with the 3:1 hardener (it catalog # EPOX-635313) here: http://www.uscomposites.com/epoxy.html

I mixed a small batch of it up (you have to use whatever you mix, so only mix what you need for each session) and applied it with a paint roller to both sides and all edges of the plywood. I let that cure, sanded it lightly and then did another coat. Some people put fgiberglass mat on for added strength, some don't - I didn't. Their website is full of FAQ's too.

That $37 worth of resin has done the entire floor, both seat boards, the control board and the transom board, and I still have about another 12 oz. to mix up & use if I need it. I bought it last year and it has kept well. If you're just doing the floor, you can probably get by with just the quart size I would guess.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Great! Much less than I anticipated. Was Epoxy the only thing you used to waterproof the floor?

When its dry you apply the carpet..

There is this misnomer about marine carpet on boats .. that its going to Rot the floor. Wrong.

Proper Decking is not going to "Rot".

Marine carpet is not going to Rot your Fiberglass LOL ... I can see Marine carpet failure installed incorrectly. Head to Head Carpet will rot before your properly glassed deck will with Paint or what not ..

What do you mean by head to head carpet?

Also, I do not plan on glassing the deck.. I don't have the time or money..

Re: Paint VS Carpet for a new floor

Head to head or wall to wall, just a term.

And I agree 100% about the carpet. True it will hold a bit of moisture, but if the deck is properly glassed it won't hurt anything. But I generally loose this argument. Thanks YD.
