always watching....

This has been on FB for a bit, price drop a few hundred to $1800, purportedly with a well running 90 which would be perfect on my boat so thinking if I can get a few hundred off that price it would be a good motor to swap when the time comes, donate boat to the scrapyard, etc.

Here is our conversation

Here is the post. Read carefully - a few fun things on this one.

1989 Galaxie Boats of California, 17 foot fish and ski made for ocean but totally awesome in a lake.. What waves..90 HP. Oil infection works perfect never no problems out of boat, best boat I ever had, just can't use any more.. health.. battery, fish finder, live well, inside storage, new floor, 36-40mph run on water hose least twice every year.. Good boat!

Not sure what to respond with....

I have an old, really old, friend that always tells me if the seller aint pissed off at you when you buy then you paid too much so.... I just had to :

well the boat is rotten below deck (prob transom as well but cant tell from pics like I can on the rest) so is only scrap. Galaxie was NOT designed for oceans - no open bow boat is designed for oceans it was designed to inland lakes and waterskiiing. It was a decent brand but nothing fancy. The value is in the motor and trailer. Trailer will fetch about $200 with some patience, scrapping boat will cost me $100 and mtor is worth $750 or so with good compression test, $250 without test as odds are it will be a parts motor. Its 35 years old, boats are notorious for being abused/neglected. My 42 year old current boat is in much better shape and I would not have driven to Minnesota to buy it without my brother inlaw performing a compression test prior. Theres my math, reach out to me if you change your mind.

and his reply...

Excuse me¡!??!!! Your crazy!!! My boat is worth 4200 right now.. And been keep in carport.. Go find you another boat,... Mine better then any you find.. Good bye??!!!

Not replied yet, he's probably blocked me. Love how it's worth $4200 yet he can't sell at $2200 or now $1800. Classic.

I've got another throwaway FB account might have fun with that.

I texted a guy yesterday about a spare trailer tire. Asked him when I could pick it up and when he learned that I live about an hour away, he said I should just look locally. Told him that I have been for about a month and he just said he was busy talking to somebody else about it.... later! WTH?

How rude. :cautious:

People think they have gold! But there is a really good side to FB market place. Hot water heater sprung a leak, replaced it Sunday. Put an add up for free water heater for scrap. Guys were all over it. Did same with a dryer not long ago. Stuff never last more than a day. No fuss no muss.

I was recently looking for a Mercruiser 140 3.0l for an alpha gen 1. Found a guy advertising tons of parts and asked him. Sent me a picture and a video of a 140 from the MC-1 era, running on 3 cylinders. Said good running and he gets $1000 for runners. I told him it wouldn’t work for me without changing things. He wouldn’t leave me alone for a while

I bought a complete solid usable boat with the identical engine/drive to what I have for $1,000. The guy just listed it with 3 small pictures and a description of “ good running boat “ and I had found it was just a little out of the way home from our Memorial Day plans so it was worth the shot

Some people do have gold! 😄

But, there are always those who will just try to tear it down and give the seller grief about the price. I learned a long time ago to turn off commenting so that I don't have to put up with such nonsense. 😏

I price my stuff based on current market value, not some "pie in the sky" price or "it's all junk" price. The problem of course, is that some folks want everything to be dirt cheap. They'll miss out on my stuff for sure. 😆

When I just bought the boat yesterday. The guy told me it was $1,000 and firm on that price. I told him that was fine as long as it was what he said it was. When all was said and done, I happily handed him the cash and toted it home. But he didn’t even try to list it correctly so I was his only bite

Yup, there are definitely good folks out there. I've met a bunch. For the most part, I've had good luck on FB Marketplace over the years. Met with a couple jerks, and just one that was sketchy. I bailed on that one pretty quickly.

I used to have pretty good luck on craigslist, but that is slowing so much that I don't even use it anymore.

Big difference between. I want to try and fix it.
And I can fix it.
True.

And don't forget old folks like me... we're initially capable and get started, then health slams us down and we have to abandon the project. I'm in that boat right now myself. :sneaky:

Old people can slow down due to weather changes passing by them. I and the wife both get increasing pain. About 12 hours before a DROPPING Barometer pressure starts. Bigger and faster the pressure drop. More intense pains and have to lay down for hours with sleeping also.

Very old people are TOUGH !

I hear ya on the weather. All my joint have gone to hell. I have been on the OR table 17 times now.
5 times for my back alone. The rest is everything else from shoulders to feet. I have been putting off a double knee replacement for a few years now but my days are numbered. Going to have another round of cortisone in them next week and might just bite the bullet this winter and get it over with. Im just afraid of the down time.
I can’t sit around it drives me nuts.

It's going to take another few months for the market to correct itself

Those with over-priced goods will just sit on them

I have seen several things on CL that have been there for a very long time and the price keeps dropping but it’s still not where they need to be to off load. Some learn the hard way.
